Highlands Restoration Coordinator

Full-time position, directly collaborating with activities and logistics related to landscape restoration within the influence area of the OC Ridge to Reef Project, including, but not limited to, pastures, farms and forests. This includes all required activities related to restoration (seed collection, tree nursery management and field planting), data collection in permanent plots, community engagement as needed during project implementation, and collaborate with botanical expeditions.

An organized person with strong managerial skills that is proactive, innovative, and passionate about conservation. Ability and passion for teamwork, capability for field work (tree nurseries, farms, restoration, etc.) under adverse conditions, as well as strong social skills to work with diverse community organizations. This person should also have good planning skills, able monitor and analyze results, and have effective communication within the Organization and externally as well (talks, workshops, social media, etc.)

Roles and responsibilities / funciones y responsabilidades:

  • Design and execute restoration designs for sites to be planted at farms.
  • Identify native tree species.
  • Visit and meet with stakeholders to propose and negotiate restoration projects in their farms.
  • Contribute to develop project proposals to seek funding as needed.
  • Provide support as needed in all tasks related to tree nursery maintenance (prepare germination beds, seedlings, etc.) Supervise and support seed collection.
  • Field data collection and analysis.
  • Submit weekly reports, as well as contribute to grant reports as needed.
  • Organize and participate in workshops and training sessions with stakeholders, communities and field crew members.
  • Promote and foster good relationships with project allies towards conservation.
  • Create content for social media.
  • Participate in other tasks as assigned within the organization, including events, workshops, giving talks, supporting other programs.
  • Generate protocols and methodologies for monitoring restoration process, experiments or to collect data asked by the program.
  • Organize and manage a restoration field crew team of 15 people, including assign field work tasks on a weekly basis as well as related administrative work (payment, vacation and health reports)
  • Manage the program’s operational databases.
  • Contribute to some specific reports and the organization of short field trips for the botanical program.

What skills are needed to do this job? / ¿Qué habilidades se necesitan para este trabajo?

  • Professional in Biology, Agronomy, Forestry, or Environmental Engineering.
  • Experience with data management and analysis.
  • Experience working with tree nurseries and basic knowledge of native trees of Costa Rica.
  • Experience working with measuring instruments (compass, range finder, GPS, diametric tape measure, etc.).
  • Experience with GIS software and spatial analysis.
  • Data collection and field sampling in relation to restoration activities.
  • Desirable to have experience managing and organizing a field crew.
  • Able to develop, organize and lead workshops.
  • Able to communicate effectively and clearly.
  • Bilingual: Spanish and English (required).
  • Driver’s license (required).

The job requires living full-time at Coto Brus.
