Position description

The Hillary Rodham Clinton Research Fellowship is a one-year program that provides unique opportunities to a recent PhD or master’s level graduate to conduct rigorous, policy-oriented research to address key knowledge gaps in the field of Women, Peace and Security (WPS). Fellows should have working knowledge of the WPS Agenda and related US and international policy frameworks.

The selected fellow will be based at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security in Washington, D.C. The Fellow will support GIWPS’ conflict monitoring initiative, including the WPS Conflict Tracker, and undertake an agreed-upon research program producing policy-relevant research papers and policy briefs. Candidates must have a background or demonstrated interest in gender as it relates to International Affairs, particularly in conflict-affected and fragile settings.

Those with knowledge related to GIWPS research priorities (peacebuilding, peacekeeping, masculinity, conflict-related sexual violence, backlash against gender equality, democratic backsliding, and climate security) or expertise and language skills related to countries included in the WPS Conflict Tracker (Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Israel and Palestine, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, Philippines, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen) are especially encouraged to apply.

To be eligible, applicants must be in the final semester of an advanced degree (PhD or master’s) or have graduated with an advanced degree within the past three years. Preference will be given to Georgetown University alumni.

The selection criteria are:

  • Excellent analysis skills, particularly the ability to consider current events and conflict dynamics through a WPS lens.
  • Strong written and oral communication capabilities, including an ability to clearly communicate research findings to the policy community.
  • Ability to work independently to produce original insights and generate new research ideas.
  • Working knowledge of the WPS field and intersectional gender issues.
  • A strong academic record with a graduate degree in political science, public policy, conflict resolution, international or national security, international development, international relations, law, economics or a related field.
  • A demonstrated interest in and commitment to closing gender gaps and other dimensions of inequality.
  • Language skills, field experience, or country specific expertise relevant to countries included in the WPS Conflict Tracker (desirable).
  • Skills in qualitative and/or quantitative research methodologies (desirable).
  • Record of publishing either in online or print outlets (desirable).

HRC Fellows will be supervised by Dr. Jessica Anania. The annual compensation for the full-time fellowship is $65,000 plus benefits, administered in a monthly stipend. Benefits include medical and retirement. For more information on the full package of benefits, see: https://benefits.georgetown.edu/enrolling/faculty. Candidates with a PhD will receive research faculty status at the Georgetown University Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service.
