The organisation

SEARMS is a registered Aboriginal Community Housing Provider (ACHP). We have served Aboriginal communities in regional NSW since 2003, providing housing and tenancy management services to the Aboriginal Housing Office and other Aboriginal organisations. 

SEARMS is in the midst of exceptional growth. We currently manage 400+ properties, operate a property maintenance crew and oversee the development of new properties. In 2020 we achieved registration as a Tier 3 Community Housing Provider (CHP).

This role

Reporting to the Housing Team Leader, the Housing Officer will deliver a high standard of customer service by providing Aboriginal tenants and community members (including those with complex needs) with accurate and timely information, managing complaints, monitoring a feedback service and identifying specialist referrals to help tenants maintain their tenancy.

The Housing Officer will be responsible for:

  • providing tenants and community members with responsive and professional advice
  • establishing and ending tenancies
  • conducting regular property inspections
  • rent collection, review and arrears recovery
  • meeting service delivery criteria in accordance with SEARMS policies and procedures.

This role can be located in either Batemans Bay or Canberra. Nowra is also an option for an experienced Housing Officer.

About you

  • Experience working with the community and / or a strong knowledge of Aboriginal culture is essential.
  • Reliable, hardworking, motivated and socially focused.
  • Desiring the equality, stability and brighter futures for Aboriginal communities and families that can be gained through safe, affordable and secure homes.
  • Have completed a Certificate IV in Social Housing.
  • Sound understanding of the Residential Tenancies Act 2010.
  • Good IT skills and adept at Microsoft Office Suite i.e. can prepare and format a letter in Word, send an email with an attachment in Outlook, create spreadsheets and do simple calculations in Excel, send and receive calendar invites in Outlook.
  • Sound English writing skills and strong verbal communication skills.
  • Customer focused and able to coordinate and manage multiple tasks and get them completed by a deadline.
  • Effective time management and organisational skills.
