Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LAC Office), located in Panama City, Panama, works closely with the 33 countries of the region and its activities are integrated into the Medium-Term Strategy and the Programme of Work approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). UNEP’s Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO) helps to implement UNEP’s programs by initiating, coordinating, and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental challenges, opportunities and emergencies. The Administration Unit provides support in all administrative matters related to the function of this Regional Office including administration of premises, human resources, procurement and ICT. The Intern will work under the supervision of the Administrative Officer (Finance and Human Resources) and the human resources assistant. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Administration Unit at UNEP Latin America and The Caribbean Office. Four interns are sought for a six-month internship period. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Officer (Finance and Human Resources) and the human resources assistant ,the intern will be oriented to support HR, and administrative functions to ensure smooth operations within the organization • Contribute to review consultant and individual contractors’ terms of reference for publication in Inspira. • Assist in the review and compilation of supporting documents requested to enable subsequent steps prior to consultant and individual contractor’s contract issuance. • Provide support in the elaboration of certifications requested by staff and consultants. • Assist in the update of human resources workflows and procedures under the constant initiative to enhance and improve them. • Assist human resources unit with inputs to answers general queries on HR process. • Document, archive, feed and keep control of human resources contracts database. • Assist in the elaboration of inputs for training courses and workshops. • Contribute with inputs and data for reports requested within the Administration Unit • Participate in various administrative tasks related to data analysis and reporting. • Participate in HR projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing employee experience, talent development and organizational effectiveness. • Provide support in the elaboration of communications, letters, information material, meetings overview, coordinating with different stakeholders, compiling statistics. • Any other assistance requested by the officers.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Final year undergraduate or master’s degree student in Administration, Law, International Relations and/or related field of studies preferred. Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and writing Spanish are required and confident level of English is desired since work will require research and communication, including reading and interviews, in both languages.
