Hybrid The intern will work five days per week (35 hours) with the possibility of telecommuting within the duty station for up to three days per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) supports the development pillar of the work of the United Nations Secretariat, including by ensuring international cooperation in the pursuit of sustainable development for all. For more information about UNDESA, please see https://www.un.org/development/desa/en/. The internship will be located in the Executive Office (EO) of UNDESA. The UNDESA/EO provides human resources management, finance and budget, logistics and general administrative support to the Department in its implementation of the mandated programme of work as approved by the General Assembly. The intern will be under the direct supervision and guidance of the Executive Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer. The intern will support the EO in the development of various guidance materials, training and communication materials for various human resources management related areas such as conduct and discipline, ethics, performance management, recruitment, etc. Time permitting, the intern will also support the delivery of training and briefings to staff. Specific tasks will include, among others:

  • Reviewing existing UN policies and guidance documents
  • Develop easy-to-understand guidance materials that summarized key issues on the subject for dissemination to UNDESA managers and staff and posting on the departmental intranet site
  • Prepare Powerpoint presentations that translate guidance for training or briefings for staff and/or managers
  • Assist in scheduling of presentations and briefings
  • Draft various communication materials on human resources issues
  • Consult with team members and clients on policy, processes and client experience to reflect in materials produced
  • Review and update various UNDESA action plans related to tasks assigned to the EO
  • Ensure all relevant documents are filed, organized and stored digitally
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Preferred areas of study:

Human Resources Management, Administrative Law, Communications or any other related studies. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work.

experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Teams. Knowledge of survey tools like Survey Monkey, MS Forms or similar is desirable. Ability to draft written materials in English in clear and easy-to-understand prose. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
