United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the leading UN entity on human rights. OHCHR represents the world’s commitment to the promotion and protection of the full range of human rights and freedoms set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The OHCHR Myanmar Team in Bangkok covers the crisis in Myanmar based on a series of mandates derived from the role of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and from resolutions adopted in the UN Human Rights Council. In this context, the Team is expected to report publicly to every session of the Council on aspects of the human rights situation and to make targeted recommendations to address the crisis. Through the Myanmar Team, OHCHR serves on both the UN Country Team and the Humanitarian Country Team in Myanmar. In so doing it advises the UN system and humanitarians on the human rights aspects of programming, protection and related analysis and advocacy. Within the scope of its programming, the Myanmar team also undertakes to support civil society capacity development and efforts to preserve civic space during a time of crisis and acute protection concerns.

As Human Rights Associate you support OHCHR as follows:

  • Support monitoring and reporting on human rights violations in Myanmar, focusing on civilian protection, humanitarian access, and impacts on women and children;

  • Assist in drafting reports, briefing notes, talking points, and other documents as needed;

  • Contribute to capacity-building and technical assistance for NGOs and civil society organizations, particularly on women’s and girls’ rights;

  • Facilitate information gathering and ensure safe data storage for analysis;

  • Support evidence-based advocacy campaigns and ensure OHCHR products reach relevant actors, while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with the do-no-harm principle;

  • Etc.

Part of the Talent programme “Swiss Youth at the United Nations / World Bank Group“, this position is sponsored by the Peace and Human Rights Division (PHRD). An International UN Youth Volunteer contract ensures that travel, relocation and UN health insurance costs are covered. Additionally, a monthly living allowance is paid.
