United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the leading UN entity on human rights. OHCHR represents the world’s commitment to the promotion and protection of the full range of human rights and freedoms set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Mexico works to ensure that institutions, authorities, victims, civil society organisations and the United Nations Country Team have adequate information, understanding, and skills to identify human rights concerns and to develop measures to address them effectively. OHCHR-Mexico also works to ensure that civil society, human rights victims, rights holders, communities and human rights defenders have increased awareness of human rights standards and mechanisms.
Main activities of the Democratic Space Unit include providing legal advice on legislation, developing human rights indicators, supporting public policies, and monitoring human rights violations (e.g., torture, disappearances). Focus is on human rights defenders, journalists, and indigenous consultation rights.
As Human Rights Associate you support OHCHR as follows:
Support the implementation of human rights policies, focusing on freedom of expression, assembly, and the right to defend human rights;
Participate in meetings with victims, document human rights violations, and assist in liaising with international human rights mechanisms;
Conduct research, monitor human rights issues, and provide updated information, particularly regarding civic space;
Plan and implement capacity-building activities for local and national actors, focusing on the protection of journalists and human rights defenders, and liaise with authorities, human rights institutions, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs);
Contribute to multi-stakeholder meetings, write reports and briefings, and analyze human rights issues to recommend actions;
Etc.
