United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the leading UN entity on human rights. OHCHR represents the world’s commitment to the promotion and protection of the full range of human rights and freedoms set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Colombia was established, upon request of the Commission on Human Rights and the initiative of the Government of Colombia, on 29 November 1996. OHCHR-Colombia operates from the capital city, Bogotá, and ten offices across the country.

The 2016 Peace Agreement between the Colombian government and FARC-EP has expanded OHCHR’s role in human rights. This includes monitoring policies on dismantling criminal groups, protecting human rights defenders, ensuring security for former FARC members transitioning to politics, reviewing detained FARC members’ cases, and supporting victims’ search for justice and reparations.

As Human Rights Associate you support OHCHR as follows:

  • Support the preparation of documents on human rights and international standards;

  • Assist in developing and monitoring the security and peace strategy;

  • Contribute to context studies and propose prevention lines for communities;

  • Support technical assistance to government counterparts on security and peace;

  • Help verify human rights violations, conduct capacity-building, and draft reports and communications;

  • Etc.

Part of the Talent programme “Swiss Youth at the United Nations / World Bank Group“, this position is sponsored by the Peace and Human Rights Division (PHRD). An International UN Youth Volunteer contract ensures that travel, relocation and UN health insurance costs are covered. Additionally, a monthly living allowance is paid.
