Job Title: Humanitarian Policy Adviser, Africa
Job Location: UKO London Moorfields
Salary: £40,000 per annum based on 35 hours per week (Plus ILW if applicable)
Contract Type: Permanent

Could you support the development and implementation of humanitarian policy and diplomacy (HD) objectives in support of African Red Cross and Red Crescent agendas, with support to and in close collaboration with the International Law and Policy team?

Can you deliver quality advice and diplomacy on complex humanitarian policy matters related to the Africa region, strongly linked to the British Red Cross (BRC) supported programmes and partnerships?

Could you work closely with National Society partners in the region and the broader International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement?

What will a Humanitarian Policy Adviser’s job involve?

• Support the provision of policy and / or technical advice within thematic work area(s) or designated area(s) of responsibility related to a small number of in-depth partnerships with Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies in the Africa region.
• Support and strengthen the implementation of BRC supported partnerships and programmes and of BRC’s International Strategy.
• Strengthen BRC’s advocacy in major emergencies within the Africa region through the development, implementation and coordination of policy and advocacy initiatives.
• Build relationships within RC/RC Movement and other organisations to influence others and incorporate and apply lessons and good/best practice from outside BRC into organisational learning.
• Represent the BRC at key national and international policy and other fora on relevant matters, proactively building and developing stakeholder relationships to influence sector policy on priority areas.
• Develop BRC’s evolving advocacy and external engagement agendas related to the Africa region, ensuring that BRC’s voice on international issues is increased.

What will a Humanitarian Policy Adviser need to be successful?

• Demonstrated ability to work in both French and English (written and oral skills essential)
• Higher level academic qualification (graduate degree level or equivalent work experience)
• Good knowledge & experience of humanitarian policy within the international humanitarian system or international development context.
• Good technical expertise within policy development and influencing, specialising in Africa-related policy issues
• Knowledge of related and cross-cutting humanitarian policy areas
• Demonstrable overseas field experience in the Africa region
• Good ability to analyse both quantitative and qualitative data and interpret information to different audiences, both written and verbal.
• Research, writing, and analytical skills
• Strong understanding of policy processes and of decision-making in the UK and internationally
• Experience of establishing effective relationships to influence and enable decision making.
• Proven experience in actively contributing to organisational culture of safeguarding and anti-racism
