Hydrogen Policy Officer

Position description

Do you want to play your part in changing transport’s climate impact and its move away from fossil fuels? Transport & Environment (T&E) is looking for a talented and dynamic Hydrogen Policy Officer to join its energy team to support T&E’s work on promoting sustainable transport fuels, in particular renewable electricity and green hydrogen and e-fuels for aviation and shipping. The Advanced Fuels Policy Officer would contribute to T&E’s advocacy on the Renewable Energy Directive and related legislations on fuels.

Supplying sustainable fuels to the transport sector remains a major challenge. We need this position to support T&E’s long term strategy to move away from the transport sector’s reliance on fossil fuels and unsustainable biofuels towards delivering renewable electricity and e-fuels to transport. The Hydrogens Policy Officer will require policy knowledge to coordinate political and technical work at the EU and national level to effectively use instruments such as the Renewable Energy Directive to promote sustainable fuels. We need convincing and compelling economic, political and legal analysis, reports and presentations to convert complex information into advocacy and media friendly material. Finally, we need to convince European lawmakers to set ambitious but achievable goals to rapidly reduce its emissions by increasing the supply and demand for sustainable and scalable transport fuels.

The role will involve:

• Get actively involved in policy discussions on the EU long-term climate strategy and renewable energy in transport;
• Support efforts of T&E energy team on the promotion of hydrogen and e-fuels under the Renewable Energy Directive and their use in the decarbonisation of aviation and shipping;
• Support national T&E advocacy in favour of an ambitious implementation at national level;
• Developing briefings and inputting into advocacy and campaign materials based on robust data, evidence and argumentation in order to reduce the climate impact of the transport sector;
• Contribute to the work on building formal and informal coalitions with key industry players, research institutes, partner NGOs;
• Identifying, commissioning and delivering impactful research tailored to the needs of the EU and national policy campaigns;
• Building and maintaining contact with policy-makers and T&E members working in this field;
• Support the overall functioning of the team (e.g. by responding to ad hoc requests from policy makers and journalists).

Job requirements

The successful candidate should ideally meet the following criteria:

• At least three years relevant experience in the field of climate, energy and/or transport;
• Expertise in and knowledge of transport decarbonisation by means of electrification and/or the use of green hydrogen and e-fuels in aviation and shipping is a plus;
• Have strong analytical skills, an ability to quickly grasp technical issues, assess data, and working knowledge of Excel;
• Ability to deliver to tight deadlines; eager to learn, with a positive and optimistic attitude when faced with challenges;
• Strong interpersonal and team-working skills, and an interest to develop/widen a network in the transport sector;
• Excellent communication and presentation skills and an ability to write in English fluently, accurately and concisely. Other European languages are considered a bonus;
• The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policymakers of different stripes, industry representatives and other stakeholders.

This position is advertised as a permanent, full-time position based in Brussels. While we offer a flexible working environment, there is an expectation that there are at least two days per week spent in the office.

The start date would be as soon as possible.
