Offer Description
The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the Experimental and Isotopic Biochemistry team at the Earth and Environment Institute of Strasbourg. He or she will work under the supervision of Yann Lucas and Joëlle Duplay within the framework of the Prima project whose aim is, with Modflow code, to model the impact of water reuse and thus water resource saving in the light of climate change, taking into account the regional hydrological and hydrogeological constraints. One case is principally considered: the dry–sub humid Izmir region (Turkey) with water deficiency from June to September where the supply of water to the cities, irrigation area and industries is mostly provided from groundwater sources exhibiting high water stress. It will also be possible to assist in modeling work for the region the semi-arid climate region of Monastir (Tunisia), where the overexploitation of groundwater partly by the industrial textile sector endangers the quality and quantity of water available through induced intrusions into coastal aquifers.
The post-doctoral fellow shall advance on modeling groundwater dynamics mainly on pilot projects in Turkey. Colleagues from INAT and DEU will use the SWAT software for surface water and to evaluate stream flows as well as infiltration and recharge. The postdoctoral researcher will mainly work on aquifer systems, and the MODFLOW code will be used to characterize groundwater flows, aquifer storage, water table level and hydrodynamic properties implied in non-reactive transport. In order to offer for water resources managers, decision makers and other relevant stakeholders the capability to design, implement and evaluate candidate scenario of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and their impacts, the Water Evaluation and Planning framework will be used. The build Decision Support System (DSS) SWAT-WEAP-MODFLOW will offer a modelling platform for water accounting, scenario assessment and a tool to identify CCA strategies. Relevant stakeholders will contribute, with a multi-actors approach, to identify a set of possible future scenarios of water resources managements from a quantitative and qualitative point of view to be simulated using the validated DSS and evaluated according to performances indicators representing the IWRM approach.
Partners of the project are INAT (Tunisia) and DEU (Turkey), whose experts in hydrology and hydrogeology will gather the necessary data on the current hydrological status in the case studies’ regions.
