The Water Quality Program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Hydrogeologist 2 position. This position is located in our Eastern Region Office (ERO) in Spokane, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

This position offers you an exciting opportunity to learn about the varied hydrogeology in Eastern Washington and engage with the regulated community to protect both groundwater and surface water quality. You will be a part of an experienced team reviewing hydrogeologic studies and investigations and writing waste discharge permits for industrial and municipal facilities in the region.

Tele-work options for this position: This position will be eligible for up to an 80% tele-work schedule, with the expectation of working in the office one day per week plus time in the field as needed. Applicants with questions about position location options, tele-work, and flexible or compressed schedules are encouraged to reach out to the contact person listed below in “other information.” Schedules are dependent upon position needs and are subject to change.

Duties

What makes this role unique? 
You will learn and apply water quality laws, rules, and guidance to protect water quality in the State of Washington. You will expand your knowledge and experience of hydrogeology with oversight from licensed hydrogeologists throughout the state. Applicable work experience will count toward obtaining a professional hydrogeologist license.

What you will do: 
You will provide support to the unit and the section by:

• Working with waste discharge permit holders and Ecology section and regional staff to develop and review hydrogeological evaluations that evaluate groundwater impacts from municipal and industrial wastewater discharges in the region.
• Working with waste discharge permit holders and Ecology section and regional staff to develop and review hydrogeological evaluations that evaluate groundwater impacts from municipal and industrial wastewater discharges in the region.
• Developing waste discharge permit limits and conditions to protect surface water and groundwater quality standards.
• Providing advice and guidance on groundwater contamination issues and surface water-groundwater related projects.
• Representing the Eastern Region in the Water Quality Program’s Groundwater Workgroup and reviewing groundwater guidance and regulatory policies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

• 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
• 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
 
Option 1:
A Bachelor’s degree involving a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, or closely allied field.
AND 
Two (2) years of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, hydrologist, geologist, or closely allied profession.
 
Option 2:
A Master’s degree involving a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, or closely allied field.

Option 3:
One (1) year as a Hydrogeologist 1, at the Department of Ecology.
 
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

• Knowledge of: physical and natural sciences related to quantity, quality, development, management, and monitoring of ground water and surface water quantity and quality which includes the principles and practices of hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, well hydraulics, stream hydraulics, soils, geochemistry, meteorology, and related subjects; basic computer science; field surveying techniques and instruments.
• Ability to: develop and apply standard methods in determination of ground water movement and storage, ground water recharge, discharge; presence, extent and migration of contaminants; areal extent and thickness of geologic formations; hydraulic conductivities, boundary conditions, and other aquifer properties; stream flow characteristics; well construction; radial flow to a well, and well interference.
