Position description

ICANN, President and CEO

ICANN and its vibrant community coordinates the Internet’s unique identifier systems in order to ensure a global, stable and secure Internet. ICANN was established in 1998 as a not-for-profit, public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to its global public interest mission. ICANN performs the key technical and operational role of ensuring that the Internet’s unique identifier systems are secure, stable and resilient. ICANN uses a unique, bottom-up, volunteer-driven multistakeholder model to facilitate community development of policies for the management of unique identifiers.

ICANN’s CEO is a dedicated steward driven by the clear mission of supporting the effective operation of the Internet’s unique identifier systems and the diverse global ICANN community of stakeholders, while being cognizant of the broader ecosystem of key global institutions collectively responsible for Internet operations and governance.

In 2023, ICANN completes its organizational milestone of 25 years. ICANN is looking for a new CEO to lead the organization at this inflection point. This is a singular opportunity for an exceptional leader that carries significant global responsibilities, requiring skills in diplomacy, advocacy, and public service.

The next CEO will be a strategic, collaborative and technically proficient leader with a global mindset and a visionary approach to leadership. They will be an excellent listener with outstanding management skills to ensure that ICANN operates and delivers on its mission effectively and efficiently in a transparent and accountable manner. The CEO should have a demonstrated capacity to manage a global technical organization with a large workforce, proven financial management experience with substantial annual operating budgets and funds under management, and experience dealing with thousands of contracts with organizations around the globe.

The CEO reports to the ICANN Board, which is responsible for establishing ICANN’s strategic plan. In the context of ICANN’s consensus-based community policy development process, the CEO implements the strategy and operations of the organization based on annual goals set by the Board and they report progress back to the Board. Both the strategic plan and its implementation are informed (and in some respects driven) by extensive community input. The Board is responsible for evaluation of the performance of the CEO and the length of their tenure.
