Information on migration has become a crucial element of empowering potential migrants to take an informed decision on their migration trajectory. Providing people with knowledge on the dangers and consequences of irregular migration, human trafficking and migrant smuggling, return and reintegration as well as the safe migration is important to counteract myths and wrongful information spread by smuggling and trafficking networks.
The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) is organising two trainings on the topic of “Migration through Media Reporting: Strengthening Knowledge, Access to Information and Tools for Journalists to better report on Migration in Iraq.” These trainings are being conducted under the framework of the project, ‘Awareness raising and information campaigns on the risks of irregular migration in Iraq’ (MIRAMI), funded by the European Union and co-funded by Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, and Greece. The training sessions are targeted towards journalists, media personnel working with government department or private companies/ media houses, and young students of migration/media/ development studies. The sessions are scheduled to take place from 09-10 September in Baghdad and 11-12 September in Erbil.
The primary objective of these trainings is to enhance the knowledge of journalists in the field of migration management and migration governance in Pakistan. Participants will gain a better understanding of important terminologies, best practices, and specific techniques related to responsible and ethical journalism. Additionally, practical exercises and case studies will be shared to stimulate group work and encourage participants to produce articles and content on migration-related topics.
Eligibility criteria and application Instructions:
A total of 35-40 journalists/ media personals, freelancers and media students working or interested to work in the field of migration will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Applicants must be Iraqi nationals, residing in Iraq and working on Iraq migration issues/ stories
- Categories include Junior or Established (freelance) print journalists, Bloggers, Radio or TV journalists, Podcasters, Photojournalists and other Media creators and recent graduates of journalism/ media studies interested to work on migration
Only complete applications will be considered. The interested applicant is requested to submit the following:
- A recent CV including contact information and overview of professional work/ experience (Also mark preferred location/dates to participate in the trainings in the e.mail too)
- Short letter explaining the background and motivation for participating in the workshop
- 1-2 publications/ developed content on migration and related topics, as an attachment/ pdf/ link
- 1-2 endorsements by senior editors/ supervisors
Commitment: All participants will be required to sign a consent form agreeing to publish 1-2 stories on migration topics in Iraqi or respective media outlets by the end of October 2024. Participants who submit their quality work on time will receive an acknowledgment certificate from the project as recognition of their efforts and will have the opportunity to engage in future activities.
