The Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSD) is part of Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (​SGITT) in United Nations Global Service Center (UNGSC) and provides comprehensive corporate field technology solutions and support ranging from data capture and management, visualization, analytics, business intelligence and reporting, solution implementation and support, as well as environmental, Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and groundwater exploration services. This is a position in UNOPS for supporting projects carried out within SGITT CSD Section which aims at providing global services to support UNGSC, field missions, UN agencies and partners. The incumbent of this position will be a personnel of UNOPS under its full responsibility.
 
The incumbent is expected to work on Groundwater Exploration and well Monitoring  and will be responsible for:
Creates hydrological and hydrogeological numerical models for groundwater basins,
Uses industry standard software to quantify groundwater reserves and identify groundwater potential around mission camps and installations
Supports the planning and execution of geophysical surveys for groundwater exploration in field missions;
Conducts well assessment activities, including pumping tests, borehole camera surveys and makes recommendations for well rehabilitation;
Participates in the designing of groundwater monitoring programmes and analyses data from groundwater sensors to ensure sustainable management of groundwater resources within mission areas of operation.
Supports borehole drilling operations in UN missions and performs drilling supervision of third-party drilling contractors when applies.
This is a position in UNOPS for supporting projects carried out for the United Nations Secretariat. 
The incumbent of this position will be a staff member of UNOPS under its full responsibility.

Functional Responsibilities:

Under the oversight of the Chief CSDS and the general supervision of UNOPS Senior Programme Manager, or their respective delegated officers, the ICT Senior Officer – Geospatial Information Officer (GIS / Groundwater Exploration) will be responsible for the following duties providing practical support to groundwater exploration efforts within the section.  

Summary of key functions and duties:

  • Assist in defining the workflows for processing satellite/aerial imagery
  • Support in performing spatial and terrain analysis
  • Assist in customizing models and workflows for 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional analyses 
  • Participate  in intensive fieldwork campaigns for peace operations
  • Assist in data collection, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) 
  • Support in borehole drilling operations in UN missions
  • Aid in developing analytical tools and models 
  • The main responsibilities will include but not limited to the following: 
  • Assist in Defining Workflows for Processing Satellite/Aerial Imagery:
  • Support the implementation of approved methods for interpreting multispectral and radar imagery.
  • Assist in image processing tasks to produce quality image maps and orthorectified color balanced mosaics. 
Support in Performing Spatial and Terrain Analysis:
  • Contribute to spatial and terrain for groundwater and subsurface analysis under supervision. 
  • Help in developing technical guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for spatial and terrain analyses.
  • Assist in Customizing Models and Workflows for 2D and 3D Analyses:
  • Support the creation of hydrological and hydrogeological numerical models for groundwater basins.
  • Aid in applying workflows for processing digital elevation models (DEM) for spatial and terrain analysis.
Participate in intensive fieldwork campaigns for Peace Operations:

Assist in planning and executing geophysical surveys and well assessments, including pumping tests, borehole camera surveys and makes recommendations for well rehabilitation; Fieldwork is performed in often hazardous field missions environments (for example South Sudan and Somalia);

  • Help in designing groundwater monitoring programs and analyzing data from groundwater sensors.
  • Assist in preparation of cargo movement requests (CMRs) for equipment and accessories needed for conduction of the surveys;
  • Assist in Data Collection, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control (QA/QC):
  • Engage in the collection, processing, and evaluation of geospatial data.
  • Support the development and maintenance of web services for geospatial information dissemination.
  • Support in Borehole Drilling Operations in UN Missions:
  • Provide assistance in drilling supervision and work with contractors for technical guidance.
  • Contribute to the support of drilling contract procurement activities.
Aid in Developing Analytical Tools:
  • Assist in developing analytical tools and models for geospatial applications (Model Builder and geoprocessing tools for desktop, web and mobile solutions) 
  • Support in the application development and testing processes.
Additional Support Duties:
  • Perform other relevant duties as required, in line with the scope of services, under the guidance of senior officers.
Education/Experience/Language requirements:

candidates With No United Nations Or Unops Experience Are Strongly Encouraged To Apply:

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) preferably in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Remote Sensing, Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) or related fields. 
  • A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree) in combination with an additional two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in processing, analyzing, and interpreting multispectral and radar imagery for hydrogeological applications;
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in performance of geospatial/terrain analysis
  • Professional experience  on electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) methods;
  • A minimum of six months of experience in Existing Wells Assessment and Rehabilitation;
  • Proficiency in the use of the following GIS software is required: ArcGIS and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst Desktop, ERDAS Imagine or ENVI.
Desired experience:
  • The following experience is optional. Candidates who do not have it are welcome to apply
  • Experience in conducting geophysical surveys, processing and interpretation of survey data; 
  • Knowledge and practical experience in base mapping and cartography, as well as GPS surveying;
  • Knowledge of geospatial information system design and implementation, as well as geospatial database design and maintenance;
  • Implementation of project management tools is desirable.
  • Knowledge of geospatial python libraries and Jupyter Notebook implementation; 
  • Practical experience in the development of analytical tools and models using Model Builder and geoprocessing tools for desktop, web and mobile solutions;
  • Experience in field operations such as UN peacekeeping or humanitarian operations;
Language Requirements:
  • For this job opening, fluency in English (speak, write, read) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.
