The WBG’s Prosperity Vice Presidency, which includes the Bank’s Manufacturing and Manufacturing Services expertise, works to connect our operational teams with clients by providing public and private sector solutions to expand Manufacturing opportunities in emerging markets.
Within this structure, the Manufacturing and Services Solutions and Impact Department (WKPTM) focuses on supporting investments in Manufacturing value chains including but not limited to those in Construction Materials (steel, cement, glass, etc.), Chemicals, Fertilizers, Automotive, Electronics, Batteries, Machinery, Textiles and Apparel, Packaging and other sectors involved in industrial production, value enhancement, and processing.
The WKPTM group is looking to hire an Associate Investment Officer (AIO) to support the implementation of the Manufacturing and Manufacturing Services sectors’ investments and solutions work. The AIO will help support management in (i) preparing scalable solutions and strategies; (ii) further WBG expertise in Manufacturing through policy application analysis, analyzing industry trends, and tracking lessons learned and disseminating the same across the organization; (iii) develop business in new advanced and evolving sectors; (iv) execute transactions and support portfolio investments across the globe; and (ii) manage key global client relationships.
The AIO will work closely with WKPTM management, sector and team leads, industry specialists and advisors, investment analysts, regional teams, and other partners to support industry and market research. The position will be based in Washington, DC. Some travel may be required.
Duties and Accountabilities:
The responsibilities of the Associate Investment Officer would include but are not limited to:
Innovation & Structuring:
• Support the design and implementation of innovative, replicable, and scalable solutions to deploy the WBG product suite to address barriers to expanded Manufacturing sectors in emerging markets in collaboration and coordination with other WBG teams and external partners; and
• Support the identification of new approaches from partners, business models and financing structures that can accelerate private sector participation and development impact.
Market Research & Strategy:
• Contribute to the development of Manufacturing sector strategies for WBG senior management (including drafting PowerPoint presentations, reports, and participating in working groups);
• Provide market research and analysis, including comparator analysis, assessment of market dynamics, benchmarking, and competitiveness;
• Research prospective client companies; and
• Support team’s internal analysis, marketing, and business development efforts.
Knowledge Sharing & Collaboration:
• Organize webinars and conferences (including preparing presentations, marketing materials, etc.) and disseminate lessons learned.
Deal Execution:
• Lead/assist in screening and analyzing new business opportunities, including building, and reviewing financial models to assess investment projects’ viability and employing other valuations methodologies to support investment analysis;
• Lead/assist in preparing investment proposal documents for senior management and credit, covering detailed assessment of risks and returns of the proposed investment.
Selection Criteria
• Master’s degree in areas such as business, finance, economics or relevant industries.
• At least 4 years of relevant work experience at an international investment bank, commercial bank, private equity firm, consulting, asset management firm or Manufacturing company including but not limited to electronics, machinery, automotive, chemicals, fertilizers, textile and apparel, packaging, construction materials etc.
• Ability to gather and effectively present large amounts of data in graphics, tables, other creative avenues from various sources and assess financial and non-financial risks associated with projects.
• Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as sound business judgment to identify issues and present creative and practical solutions.
• Highly proficient in the use of AI, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to work successfully in multicultural teams and across regions with demonstrated team spirit and responsiveness.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; knowledge of other languages would be a plus.
• Keen interest in emerging markets and sustainable development.
• Highly motivated and proactive, committed to the highest ethical standards.
• Ability to demonstrate attention to detail, thoughtful scenario analysis, and diligence in the quality of one’s own work.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
• Genuine dedication to development and to the World Bank Group’s mission, strategy, and values.
