Impact Analysis Biologist (Wildlife Biologist II)

You would coordinate with a team of wildlife management professionals to oversee regional impact analysis activities and coordination, which includes building relationships with local, state and federal partners to plan projects that improve or mitigate impacts to wildlife habitats.  Other duties would include assisting the planning and implementation of large-scale Watershed Restoration Initiative projects on private, state and federal lands.  You would also be a local expert on minimizing impacts to wildlife from recreational activities along the wildland-urban interface.

Key responsibilities and day to day responsibilities of this position:

• Be part of a team of wildlife and habitat biologists and technicians who implement regional habitat management activities on private, state and federal lands.
• Help develop and implement the Habitat Section’s regional budget and workplan priorities.
• Contribute to a culture of teamwork and cooperation through meaningful interactions with fellow team members and staff from other regional administrative sections.
• Develop partnerships with private landowners and organizations and local, state and federal government agencies to review and provide input on proposed projects to mitigate impacts to local wildlife populations and habitats.
• Attend professional trainings and become a regional expert in water rights, water law and the practical implications of local water management activities on local wildlife populations and habitats.
• Engage local stakeholders to review habitat and recreation management activities at regional wildlife management areas, and work cooperatively with partners to revise relevant management plans that support wildlife and habitat management objectives.

Minimum or “day-one” qualifications:

• Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree in wildlife/range management/botany/biology/environmental policy or a closely related field. Or directly related work experience equivalent.
• They must have an understanding of the principles, theories and practices of wildlife and habitat requirements.
• Sound understanding of botany and range management, and knowledge in habitat restoration techniques are critical.
• Applicants should have experience planning and implementing habitat restoration projects and reviewing and commenting on management activities.
• Applicants should also have experience working with various partners and organizations.
• Great writing skills are required. This position will write, review, and edit comment letters, letters of support, project proposals, and Habitat Management Plans.

Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications: 

• At least 5-years of work experience in a wildlife-related field, and a demonstrated knowledge of Utah’s wildlife and lands conservation programs, laws, rules, policies and practices.
• Proven ability to build collaborative, solution-based partnerships with diverse stakeholders and organizations.
• The ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
• A masters degree in wildlife biology, an applicable natural resource management field, or another closely related field.
• The ability to work with diverse stakeholders to find creative and pragmatic solutions to problems, processes and socio-political conflicts.
• Previous experience managing projects, programs and budgets.
• Practical experience dealing with the politics — internal and external — of natural resource management.

Work environment, working conditions, physical requirements –
Regular work schedule, 40 hours a week)  There will occasionally be 10+ hour days in remote areas.   Some travel and overnight stays required. The ability to lift 50 pounds, hike five miles, work extended hours in adverse weather conditions, including heat and cold, may be required. 
Miscellaneous – Must have a valid driver’s license.
