Appointments to Independent Disability Advisory Group (IDAG) Member positions.The opportunityTransport for London (TfL) is looking to appoint new Members to its highly esteemed and well-regarded Independent Disability Advisory Group (IDAG). This is an opportunity to drive and shape the accessibility and inclusivity of the transport in London, enabling social participation and the city’s future growth. As a member you will make a tangible difference in the lives of disabled people. By joining IDAG you will have the chance to make recommendations and influence policies, projects, and initiatives that directly impact millions of people who rely on TfL’s services every day.TfL is responsible for London Underground, London Buses, London Overground, Docklands Light Railway, Elizabeth Line, London Trams, London River Services, many of the roads in London, and regulates London’s taxi and private hire services.As a Member, you will have a proven understanding of TfL’s successes and challenges, combined with a genuine interest and passion for promoting equity and inclusion in all aspects of London’s transport provision. Using your experience in the private, public, academic or voluntary sectors you will support TfL in delivering a safe, accessible, inclusive world leading transport system for Londoners, visitors and all users in the years to come.Time and feeMembers are expected to spend approximately one to two days per month on this role, including attending regular IDAG meetings. The maximum time commitment to the role is 30 days per year.Members are not employed by TfL or the Greater London Authority (GLA) to ensure the group’s independence. The basic fee for IDAG members is £500 per day.TfL covers pre-agreed costs for any reasonable expenses incurred in attending meetings, including access costs.Candidate requirementsThe ideal candidates will:

  • Have experience of living with disability and a personal understanding of what it is like to experience barriers when travelling in London (essential)
  • Be experts or leaders in their field and will have already proved themselves at a high level (essential)
  • Be able to operate in a high profile, publicly accountable environment (essential)
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding and awareness of the social and political context and dynamics in which TfL operates (essential)
  • Be able to provide credible, high quality and strategic advice to help shape policy, guide strategy and support organisational and Mayoral objectives, within the context of the Equality Act 2010 and other relevant legislation (essential)
  • Be able to scrutinise, probe and challenge decision making in a manner that is constructive, fair and robust (essential)
  • Be able to demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following: the social model of disability; disabled people’s rights; accessibility standards and good practice within a transport context; equity and inclusion; social justice; human rights (essential)

In addition to attending regular meetings, IDAG Members, depending on their knowledge, skills and experience, provide an expert review function for Equality Impact Assessments, tender documents and other plans, to help ensure decisions are robust, objective and evidence based. Members may also work directly with project teams in a dedicated advisory capacity.Members undertake public engagements and participate in communication activity on behalf of IDAG, where this does not conflict with their independent status.All Members are required to adhere to high ethical standards, understand and embrace the ‘Principles of Public Life’ as defined by the Nolan Committee, and comply with TfL’s Gifts and Hospitality policy.IDAG benefits from a broad range of skills and experience. The role is only open to external candidates due to IDAG being independent as there would be a conflict of interest if we appointed an employee of TfL.
