Offer Description

Are you interested in exploring how artificial intelligence can create new frontiers in the world of sound and acoustic engineering? Do you want to be at the forefront of innovation, working on cutting-edge research that directly impacts industry?

We are offering a fully funded industrial PhD fellowship in partnership with Aalborg University (Aalborg, Denmark) and the Innovation Fund Denmark. We are looking for an candidate in machine learning to join Bang & Olufsen’s Artificial Intelligence Group. The ideal candidate will contribute to the development of intelligent sound systems that optimize the user’s auditory experience. These systems will adapt to the user’s preferences, situational context, and the unique acoustics of the surrounding environment.

The Industrial PhD project, part of the Innovation Fund Denmark’s Industrial Researcher programs, provides a distinctive combination of academic rigor and practical industrial application. This project is a joint venture among Bang & Olufsen and Aalborg University (AAU), renowned as one of Europe’s premier universities. Supervision is provided by Dr. Pablo Martínez-Nuevo and Dr. Sven E. Shepstone from B&O, along with Prof. Zheng-Hua Tan from AAU. Research activities will be predominantly conducted at Bang & Olufsen with a component at Aalborg University.

As a doctoral candidate, you will become part of the Artificial Intelligence Group at Bang & Olufsen in Lyngby (Greater Copenhagen area), committed to progressing advanced AI research for developing systems ready for market integration that facilitate Bang & Olufsen’s hallmark user experiences. You will be integrated into a multidisciplinary team of machine learning researchers and engineers. Given AI’s broad impact, our efforts intersect various technical domains with a special focus on audio and acoustics, fundamental to our brand. The position also offers the chance to engage with and work alongside a diverse group of specialists within various departments at Bang & Olufsen.

The project

The quality of experience when reproducing sound in domestic environments depends on many factors, including acoustic variables usually unknown when developing loudspeakers (e.g., room acoustics, or loudspeaker and listening locations). There exist loudspeaker configuration procedures aiming at delivering the best possible quality of experience in any room. However, this process is commonly obtrusive and static. Moreover, this approach ignores users’ preferences. Context-specific reproduction is also neglected. Thus, we want to create an artificial intelligence-based system that chooses how the audio content should be reproduced. A system that optimizes the user’s quality of experience by learning their preferences, exploiting contextual information, and alleviating intrusive acoustic configurations.

What you bring

A real passion and interest for AI and audio/acoustics! In order to set you up for success as a doctoral candidate, we also look for the following skills and experience:

  • Master’s degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • High level of academic achievement in relevant subject areas. For foreign educations, your grades must place you among the top 30% of your year group for the master’s and bachelor’s programmed combined. For Danish educations,
    • Master’s and bachelor’s degree combined: Weighted average of at least 8.2 on the 7-point scale or 9 on the 13-point scale.
    • For a two-year master’s degree alone: Weighted average of at least 9.5 on the 7-point scale or 9.4 on the 13-point scale.
  • You should have a clear talent for scientific and engineering research, demonstrated by a substantial Bachelor’s or Master’s project. This includes conducting experimental research, effectively utilizing relevant literature, engaging in computer-based simulations, and producing a formal dissertation-style report.
  • Advanced mathematical, analytical and computer programming skills.
  • Comprehensive written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advantage will be given to applicants with experience in at least one of the following: deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), reinforcement learning, recommender systems, computer vision, audio/acoustics, signal processing, statistical analysis, software development, and academic writing.
  • You are resourceful and excel in dynamic, fast-paced, and often ambiguous settings.

What we offer

  • An engaging international research and industrial setting.
  • Comprehensive scientific training within a doctoral program framework.
  • The skills to transform both your own research and that of others into innovative solutions and business value.
  • Opportunities to attend local and international courses, workshops, and conferences.
  • A PhD degree from Aalborg University, recognized as one of Europe’s leading universities.
