Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is located with the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT), under the ICT Security Service. The internship is for 6 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is unpaid and can be part time or full time. Onsite presence is highly desirable, however, a hybrid of remote can be considered as well. Interns work four to five days per week (20-35 hours), with supervision and support of a staff member. Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the ICT Security Threat and Incident Management Team Lead, the intern will:

  • Support the ICT Security team in responding to security incidents and threats.
  • Analyze security alert and events from multiple data sources and tools.
  • Assist in developing and fine-tuning detection rules and use cases.
  • Monitor threats and analyze threat intelligence.
  • Assists in the development and improvement of internal tools, integrations, and automation of processes.
  • Maintain documentation of internal security playbooks/processes/procedures.

Qualifications/special skills

  • To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Studies/degree in the areas of Information and Communications Technology, Information Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, or related field is desirable. Knowledge analyzing security alerts or using SIEM products and technologies such as Elasticsearch, Microsoft Defender and Azure Sentinel is desirable. Knowledge in Cyberthreat Intelligence, Incident Response or Threat Hunting is desirable. Knowledge in information security is desirable. Knowledge in general-purpose scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell, etc.) is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
