Offer Description
We are looking for a passionate and resourceful MSc candidate able to integrate into an organization that is developing innovative products and services to protect crops against pests and diseases.
The ideal candidate should have self-motivation, curiosity and should proactively formulate ideas, evaluate options, and implement practical solutions that translate into X. fastidiosa vector insects monitoring and diagnosis tools.
Main responsibilities:
The candidate shall report directly to the Director of the Department of Monitoring and Diagnosis of Pest and Diseases and will have the following responsibilities:
- Develop and conduct monitoring field surveys of X. fastidiosa vector insects in selected habitats in Alentejo region;
- Perform a taxonomic classification of the X. fastidiosa vector specimens collected in the field;
- Process and statistically analyse X. fastidiosa vector insect data;
- Study the characteristics of X. fastidiosa vector insects, including interactions with other species and their environment, as well as their reproduction cycle and population dynamics;
- Register, interpret and report results accordingly to InPP´s established procedures, both internally and with external stakeholders;
- Assist other InPP projects focusing on pest/disease monitoring and diagnostic.
Specific requirements:
- MSc in entomology, biology, environmental sciences or similar;
- Good knowledge about designing field surveys to monitor terrestrial arthropods, as well as experience in insect taxonomy;
- Experience in morphological and/or molecular pests/diseases identification;
- Basic skills in analysing data with statistical languages such as R or python;
- Basic skills in using GIS, preferably QGIS, to map and visualise spatial data;
- Creative and independent, but also able to work as a member of multidisciplinary, project-oriented team, with demonstrated problem-solving skills and flexibility;
- Good written and spoken Portuguese and English.

- Knowledge of species distribution models (SDM);
- Ability to communicate effectively to a non-technical audience in written and oral form;
- Capacity to work in extreme conditions, especially during hot summers;
- Self-learner, self-motivated, curious and team worker.
InnovPlantProtect is a private non-profit association
InnovPlantProtect aims to create innovation for the protection of crops, seeds and post-harvest products through:
- Development of innovative technologies and knowledge creation, as well as improvement of existing technologies for crop protection;
- Applied scientific research to create novel intellectual property developed technologies in the market, and to develop processes and products;
- Provide technical support to public or private companies and entities, assisting them in the introduction of biotechnological strategies, methods and processes, and in the orientation and implementation of industrial research and development, directed towards the protection of crops, seeds and post-harvest products;
- Collaboration with (inter)national public and/or private institutions, in their areas of activity.
Workplace
The work location will be at the headquarters of InnovPlantProtect, situated in INIAV (Elvas), at the former National Plant Breeding Station.
Salary and contract
A full-time uncertain term contract will be offered, starting April 15th , 2024.
The contract will continue until September, 30, 2025 with a trial period of one month. The contract may be renewed annually for a further one year depending on performance and further financial support. All the activities to be developed will be subject to confidentiality clauses.
The gross value of the remuneration will be 1.559,00€ (14 months – 21.826,00€/year) and a lunch subsidy of 6,00€ per working day.

This contract is financed in the scope of the Investment RE-C05-i03 – Research and innovation agenda for the sustainability of agriculture, food and agribusiness, Project No. 13/C05-i03/2021 – PRR-C05-i03-I-000176, “SNM_XylellaVt – Sistema Nacional de Monitorização de Insetos Vetores da Xylella fastidiosa”, within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
