The Department of English, Linguistics, & Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth invites applications for its pool of instructors and/or assistant professors for the 2024-25 academic year. Term contracts only; positions contingent on funding.
Appointments have an anticipated start date of fall semester 2024 (8/19/24). This is a full-time, nine-month annually renewable academic appointment with a 4/4 teaching load. Courses taught will likely include College Writing (with first-year students) and/or Advanced Writing for majors in Business, Science, Engineering, and Human Services (with third to fourth-year students). These courses take a rhetorical approach to guide undergraduate students in improving their information literacy, critical thinking, and writing processes at the college level and beyond.

Required Qualifications

  • Masterâ™s degree from a regionally accredited university in a relevant field, such as English, Writing Studies, Composition/Rhetoric, Journalism, or Technical Communication. 
  • Two semesters or three quarters of relevant teaching experience at the college level (graduate TA experience acceptable).
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education (see Teaching Portfolio contents in âœHow to Apply❠below).
  • Demonstrated commitment to instruction that supports diverse learners and builds inclusive classroom environments.
  •  Effective written communication skills appropriate to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree from a regionally accredited university in a relevant field.
  • Two or more years of relevant teaching experience at the college level.
  • Experience teaching a variety of upper- and lower-division courses such as those offered by the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD).
  • Effective teaching and communication skills appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to design and deliver instruction through an online course management system (e.g., Canvas).
  • Demonstrated experience with assessment.
  • A record of ongoing professional development related to writing instruction or experience taking on new challenges related to undergraduate writing instruction.
