Position description

The faculty of the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track position at the rank of Instructor or Senior Instructor to begin August 16, 2025. The position is a 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 4 courses per semester, 8 courses for the academic year. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, the Institute’s needs, and the availability of funding. The successful candidate will teach a range of courses in Global Studies from the introductory to capstone level, including courses specific to their academic specialization as they align with curricular needs, which may include area studies courses. They will also provide service to the unit and develop a professional growth plan for teaching informed by current scholarship.
The Walker Institute of International and Area Studies has been bringing the world to Carolina for over 60 years. The Institute supports interdisciplinary international research, teaching, and programming on our campus and in our community. Our mission is sustained by approximately 200 faculty associates from the College of Arts and Sciences and across our campus. The Walker Institute offers an interdisciplinary B.A. in Global Studies, a B.S. in Cyber Policy and Ethics, and minors in each area studies program: African Studies; Asian Studies; European Studies; Latin American, Caribbean and US Latinx Studies; Islamic World Studies; and Russian and Eurasian Studies. Required Education and Experience

By the time of the appointment, the successful candidate must have a PhD in any of the fields allied to Global Studies, i.e., Anthropology, Geography, History, International Relations, Political Science or a related field, or a relevant interdisciplinary or area studies field. Scholarly subfield is open to those areas reflected in our Global Studies professional pathways, i.e., Global Development and Sustainability; Global Health; Global Peace, Conflict, and Human Rights; Global Culture; or Emerging Technologies and Global Affairs.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to someone who has a demonstrated capacity to offer foundational courses in one of the area studies programs housed in the Walker Institute.
