Job Description Summary

Situated within the Faculty of Medicine, the Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) supports physicians and other health professionals across BC with education, courses, and learning opportunities to support practice improvement, patient care, and health care delivery. The Interactive Designer, Creative Learning is responsible for the design and production of e- learning materials (including online modules and practice support tools) and other digital media to support the research, education, and events.

Key competencies of the role include project discovery and identifying learning needs; structuring content suitable for adult learners, designing and creating immersive digital learning experiences, evaluating and engaging in continuous quality improvement, and maintaining e-learning content for multiple projects. Shared office space will be provided. The chosen candidate will be required to attend early morning and late afternoon meetings, with the occasional evening or weekend meeting. These meetings may occur offsite.

Organizational Status
Overall direction will be obtained from the Learning and Curriculum Manager, Creative Learning. Project supervision may be provided by other project coordinators and managers.
Work Performed

  • Develop online modules through the instructional design process from project discovery/initiation and needs assessment to informed content development and evaluation through to continuous quality improvement.
  • Propose and create didactic visual media to support educational content; including, but not limited to: information and data visualizations, charts and graphs, interactives, scientific / medical illustrations, and other illustrations, through an iterative design process from concept to final deliverable.
  • Evaluate educational needs assessments to determine educational and technology requirements and structure content suitable for adult learners.
  • Work collaboratively with planning committees to develop storyboards, scripts and design mock-ups to support the design process.
  • Evaluate existing visual media and interactive materials; propose and execute improvements.
  • Provide design, visual communication, and andragogical rationale to support decision making.
  • Evaluate and propose improvements to user experience (UX) across various web-based platforms; support implementation and UI design work.
  • Assist and coordinate content development for multiple projects. This includes reviewing the content provided by external experts, identifying the gaps between the content and the learning objectives, writing and editing learning material, and structuring the learning experience.
  • Assist content experts and project leads in course design and in the development of instructional materials, and provide input on project timelines.
  • Maintain online modules and support systems updates.
  • Attend working group meetings to provide interactive design expertise.
  • Work with content experts, other interactive designers, project leads and other stakeholders to ensure effective communication of issues, needs, problems and opportunities.
  • Work closely in a non-hierarchical, collaborative learning and teaching environment to continuously improve design practices and methodologies.
  • Stay up-to-date on literature and current trends in interactive design, visual communication, and educational technology to build understanding regarding best practices for pedagogical effectiveness in a healthcare and medical context.
  • Supports the fulfillment of UBC CPD’s mission and vision through active participation in UBC CPD working groups or staff committees (e.g., Strategic Planning Working Groups).
  • Maintain and upgrade applicable job skills as identified and required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Overall direction will be obtained from the UBC CPD Learning and Curriculum Manager, Creative Learning, Project Managers, and from regular meetings, which the interactive designer is expected to attend. This position requires working effectively within an organizational structure and involves a degree of self-direction, the ability to work to tight timelines and strong interpersonal skills. The Interactive Designer will be required to exercise sound judgment and decision making as poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of the UBC CPD Office. 
Supervision Received
The position reports to Learning and Curriculum Manager, Creative Learning. Some direction may be provided by other project coordinators and managers.
Supervision Given
May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Educational or Instructional Media Design, Interactive Arts and Technology, Interactive Media and Design.
  • Integrates equity, diversity, inclusion and mutual respect as values in their work.
  • Experience creating learning experiences, online modules, courseware, and learner assessment
  • Experience working with eLearning authoring software applications such as Articulate Storyline and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems such as Moodle and Canvas.
  • Knowledge of user experience and user interface design.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional design practices.
  • Experience with assessment and quizzing technologies; experience conducting and evaluating user experience through usability testing
  • Ability to design and develop custom learning experience and visual media with beginner to intermediate knowledge of HTML, CSS, jQuery, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and video editing and animation software such as Adobe After Effects.
  • Experience writing in various formats, including for e-learning modules and scripts for video and simulations.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience creating storyboards, scripts, and low-to-high-fidelity prototypes.
  • Ability to show initiative and good judgment.
  • Experience developing learning objectives and ensuring content matches those objectives.
  • Familiarity with information and communication technology and multimedia applications.
  • Ability to structure content and activities appropriate for adult learners.
  • Ability to effectively use software at an advanced level. e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles.
  • Ability to work with subject matter experts to identify learning needs.
