Job Description: Westmoreland Sanctuary seeks an intern enrolled in a college undergraduate, master’s, or PhD academic program. This is for a 6-8 week summer or fall internship. The focus of work will be on habitat restoration project effort that will include streams, forest, and field habitats.  

Compensation: Stipend amounts will be paid ½ at the start of the program and ½ at the end of the program with a possibility of a performance-based bonus. Stipends vary based on experience and relevant funders and range from $1,000 to $1,500. Flexible work schedules Westmoreland also works with schools to help secure academic credit.  Performance based bonuses are awarded at the end of the summer.

Education Provided: Significant skills will be provided by the experience including Water sampling, collecting sample field, plant identification, pond ecology, forest ecology and wildlife management, animal care, and more.  

Job Details: This will include but not limited to: 

  • manually pulling out invasive plants  
  • planting native plants  
  • testing water quality 
  • deer fencing   
  • recording/reporting wildlife  
  • take complete field notes and transfer data into the Westmoreland Sanctuary Natural Resource Management Plan  
  • work with game cameras  
  • support environmental education efforts  

Stipend will be commensurate with experience. Payment will be made at the end of the internship and there will be an opportunity to receive a performance-based bonus.  

College Credit: We have successfully worked with a variety of colleges to help students receive academic credit for their work.  

Mission: Westmoreland Sanctuary’s mission is to acquire and enrich land for the free use, enjoyment, and education of the public.  

Organization: We are an independent public charity and are not part of any federal, state, county park system or part of a larger charitable organization. Founded in 1957, we have 7.5 miles of trails, a Nature Museum, and 640 acres of land.
