OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Health Promotion (HPR) cluster, under the Healthier Populations pillar, works to contribute to the achievement of the WHO GPW14 goal of 1 billion healthier people by: promoting health at local, national and global levels, especially for disadvantaged populations; slowing and reversing the adverse trends in the common NCD risk factors by providing guidance for national policies and programmes; and building national capacity for health promotion and integrated NCD prevention and control programmes. This will include contribution to enhancement of integrated programming of NCDs and Communicable diseases.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under overall guidance of the WHO Representative to the Eswatini Country Office and the supervision of a technical expert in the respective area, the intern is assigned the agreed terms of reference:

<– [if supportLists]–><–[endif]–>Provide support on process to review/development of national policies, programs, and structures for addressing NCDs risk factors

<– [if supportLists]–>Provide support on process to develop comprehensive multisectoral national NCDs risk factors control strategies, plans, programmes, and policies

<– [if supportLists]–>Support activities aimed at addressing the risk factors that influence health and well-being, including tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, violence and injury, water, and sanitation as well as environmental health considering sustainable development.

<– [if supportLists]–>Support training related to evidence-based measures to promote public health and/or to address modifiable NCD risk factors.

<– [if supportLists]–>Support priority health programs to strengthen community engagement, social mobilization, communication for behavioral change and promote multi sectoral actions to address NCDs risk factors.

<– [if supportLists]–><–[endif]–>Support integration of NCDs with Communicable diseases (including functional areas in TB and HIV)

<– [if supportLists]–><–[endif]–>Perform other related duties as required or directed

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. Within this internship, the intern will:

<– [if supportLists]–>1.<–[endif]–>Demonstrate mastery; actualize his knowledge in the use of modern office technology through internal courses, on the job or self-training.

<– [if supportLists]–>2.Demonstrate understanding of procedures and practices, rules and regulations, organizational structure, of WHO and the Country Office, by understanding the global operating system of WHO between headquarters, regional offices and country offices.

<– [if supportLists]–>3.<–[endif]–>Understand the objectives of the programme/area of work

<– [if supportLists]–>4.<–[endif]–>Communicate clearly about the programme/area of work

<– [if supportLists]–>5.<–[endif]–>Learn how to develop/design and implementing public health risk reduction programmes at national and/or decentralized levels

<– [if supportLists]–>6.<–[endif]–>Develop a technical understanding of working on disease risk factor policies and strategies and/or broader communicable and non-communicable disease prevention and control efforts.

<– [if supportLists]–>7.<–[endif]–>Develop report writing skills

<– [if supportLists]–>8.<–[endif]–>Develop facilitation, training and capacity building skills with counterparts, partners and stakeholders

<– [if supportLists]–>9.<–[endif]–>Know how to prepare a comprehensive analysis / background documents for meetings/workshops

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

Duration is six (06) months.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time studies of public health related field, public policy, public administration, project management or social sciences. at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification).

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The allowance depends on the duty station and other external support (grant, scholarships, etc.) received by the intern. In Mbabane, Eswatini, the maximum amount of the allowance provided by WHO is SZL13,380 per month. The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete. In addition, WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

However, no such restriction applies to temporary or longer-term staff positions if the vacancy has been advertised and a competitive process completed.
