Work Location
This internship is located with the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment (CAE) in the Border Management Branch (BMB), Division for Operations (DO), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, Austria.
Expected duration
The internship is for period 3 to 6 months with a desired starting date in July 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities
Organized crime poses a major threat to our environment, with organized criminal groups around the world engaging in wildlife trafficking, crimes in the fisheries sector, waste trafficking and illegal mining, among other illicit activities. Crimes that affect the environment are serious organized crime with far-reaching impacts for the economy, security, the environment, and human health, contributing to biodiversity loss and climate change. UNODC assists Member States to prevent and respond to crimes that affect the environment such as wildlife and forest crime, crimes in the fisheries sector, illegal mining, and trafficking in precious metals and waste. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: • Undertake research work, using electronic sources, in the field of transnational organized crime with particular emphasis on environmental crime as well as other relevant topics as required; • Assist in the drafting of concept notes and background documents taking stock of existing knowledge on a specific issue in order to suggest operational ways forwards for the Programme; • Assist the CAE team in desk work, with fact-checking, editing and proof-reading; • Support the preparation of training material for technical assistance activities such as training workshops; • Assist in the preparation of ad hoc events; • Assist in the preparation of promotional materials, social media tweets and website updates; • Support the efficient and accurate collection and organization of data through such tasks as establishing and maintaining files using accepted organizational methods; • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION); • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for (such as criminology, law, political or social sciences, international relations) is required. • Applicants need to demonstrate keen interest in the work of the United Nations and Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment • Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. • Applicants should be able to draft news articles and/or social media posts. 2. Applicants must be enrolled in the final year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) or in any stage of Master’s or PhD Programmes or equivalent or have completed one of these degrees. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Information
The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of professional staff of the office to which they are assigned. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
