Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is located in the Programme Planning and Budget Division (PPBD) of the Office of Programme, Planning, Finance and Budget (OPPFB) in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC) and is for three months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department and performance of the intern. PPBD is committed to ensuring the highest standards in the preparation and presentation of programme budgets of the United Nations. These budgets are formulated in line with the agreed results-based budgeting methodology. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: 1) Extract and analyse large data sets to identify trends and patterns in the vast UN data sets and derive financial insights from the data analyzed. 2) Analyze big data to draw conclusions that can be used for machine learning and to develop tools and models that can be supported by artificial intelligence. 3) Support in gathering, and presenting information to support the deliberations of the advisory committees and the General Assembly. 4) Assist in drafting responses to queries from advisory committees and the General Assembly. 5) Assist in assessing budgetary implications of recommendations of the advisory committees. 6) Support programme budget officers in a wide range of budgetary and analytical tasks. 7) Perform other related duties as required. In addition to the frequent interaction within the policy and coordination unit and with the director of the Programme Planning and Budget Division, the work also implies interaction with Budget Officers, as well as with colleagues from the budget and finance network of the various entities benefitting from regular budget funding. Additionally, exposure to auditors, members of advisory bodies and the General Assembly is expected.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Proficiency in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar, and standard office automation equipment-scanner, printer is desirable. Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter is desirable. Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Information
The internship is UNPAID and is designed to be in person and full-time at the duty station. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also to adapted to allow remotely and/or in part-time. Interns work up to five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
