Expected duration
5 to 6 months. The desired start dates for two interns positions are 15 February 2024 or sooner, and 1 June 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is for a period of 5 to 6 months. This internship is UNPAID and can be in person based in New York, fully remote, or a combination of both. It is a full-time internship (35 hours per week), but can be adjusted to part-time (20 hours per week).
A full-time internship is for an initial period of two months, and a part-time internship is for an initial four months. Internships may be extended up to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the Division.
This position is located in the Office of the Director for Coordination and Shared Services (ODCSS), serving the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Peace Operations (DPO).
The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships. The Department’s mandate is to prevent and resolve conflict through inclusive political solutions.
The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) provides political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations around the world and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates. The Department works to integrate the efforts of UN, governmental and nongovernmental entities in the context of peacekeeping operations. DPO also provides guidance and support on military, police, rule of law, mine action and other relevant issues to other UN political and peacebuilding missions.
The Intern will primarily assist a project to review the implementation of the Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy and the development of an updated implementation plan on uniformed gender parity, by supporting a consultation process. In addition, the intern will support the office’s data work and provide broader programmatic support to efforts to implement diversity and inclusion strategies for civilian personnel.
The internship is for a period of 6 months. This internship is UNPAID and can be in person based in New York, fully remote, or a combination of both. It is a full-time internship (35 hours per week). Flexibility can be granted to work part-time for shorter periods of the internship.

Qualifications/special skills
We seek candidates with relevant coursework in international relations, gender, public policy, data analysis and visualization, project management, business/public administration, political science, information management, public relations, communication/ journalism, or similar. Having completed academic research projects and qualitative or quantitative data analysis is an advantage.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
1. (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
