Job Purpose

According to the IFRC Internship Guidelines (2017) of the Americas Regional Office, the fundamental purpose of the Internship Programme is to “engage young professionals, recent graduate or post-graduate students and developing partnership within movement, universities and other international organizations in the activities of the IFRC and to give them the opportunity to enhance their educational experience through practical work assignments under the direct supervision of a qualified professional within their field of interest.”

Community Resilience is one of the areas within the unit based in incorporating Alliance Advocacy and Knowledge Management into Disaster Risk Management programs and initiatives. 

The aim of the internship is to provide support and input to the overall and more detailed mapping, compilation and planning activities of the Health, Disaster, Climate and Crisis Unit, and more specifically within the thematic area of Community Resilience, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction.

This mapping and compilation exercise will support the unit in improving its understanding of current National Society’s activities and the support needed for strengthening integrated programming in an urban context. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

In direct collaboration with the staff of the Health, Disaster, Climate and Crisis Unit, the intern will, among other tasks, provide support for carrying out the following activities:
General tasks:

  • Support in the development of Americas Climate and Environment Roadmap 2024-2026, through different activities including but not limited to: its analysis and final proposal, and elaboration of infographic results of the Roadmap survey.
  • Support in the development of infographics for the results of the Americas Climate and Environment Roadmap 2021-2023.
  • Organization/technical and administrative support in knowledge, education and advocacy activities and programmes such as the Americas Climate Change Champions Network.
  • Organization/technical and administrative support within ARO and/or reference centres (e.g. CREPD) in events and activities related to Early Warning Systems, Anticipatory Action, Climate Smart Livelihoods and Nature based Solutions. 
  • Support in organization and logistics of projects’ validation workshops regarding study fields mentioned above.
  • Mapping and compilation of relevant information, data and methodologies, and 
    identification of key areas, based on National Red Cross Societies (NS) plans and 
    consultations, of programs, projects, and initiatives within the thematic areas of the unit. 
  • Mapping of key areas where NS in a specific region of the Americas (including but not 
    limited to Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Colombia) need support from the unit and elaborate plans for follow-up.
  • Compilation of information needed for the elaboration of case studies in NS to increase visibility of examples of good practices and lessons learned (for instance activities related to Community Resilience, Anticipatory Action, and Climate Change in Disaster Risk Management) to improve coordination and peer to peer support between National Societies in the Americas. These case studies should be developed with the focus of combining community-level work and local-level research and selecting effective appropriate advocacy tactics.
  • Elaborate reports and provide feedback on operational programmes.
  • Elaborate a final report synthesizing all activities carried out during the internship.

Education

  • The Intern must be culminating their bachelor’s degree or be enrolled in a graduate programme related to the areas covered in the position for the duration of the internship.

Experience

  • Working experience with the Red Cross and/or international organizations is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Languages

  • Sound analytical and synthesis skills linked to pragmatic approach.
  • Excellent oral, written, and other communication skills.
  • Team working skills.
  • Ability to travel anytime

 

Languages

  • Good command of Spanish and English.
