Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For nearly forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements worldwide, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The position is in the Office of Human Resources and Training Unit (HRTU), Management Advisory and Compliance Service (MACS) in Nairobi Kenya. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office of HRTU to which they are assigned. Under the direct supervision of the staff member in HRTU, the Intern will assist the office in the matter of Human Resource management, administrative work and etc. Responsibilities • Follow up on actions related to the administration of the human resource activities, e.g., recruitment, placement, relocation, promotion, performance appraisal, job classification, reviews, separation, etc., ensuring consistency in the application of regulations and procedures. • Perform a wide range of office support and administrative functions. • Responds or drafts responses to routine correspondence and other communications; uses standard word processing package to produce a wide variety of large, complex documents and reports. • Generates a variety of standard statistical and other reports, work orders, etc., using various databases. • Proofreads documents and edits texts for accuracy, grammar, punctuation and style, and for adherence to established standards for format. • Assists in the maintenance of the Job Description database by scanning and posting onto the database • Reviews, records, distributes and/or processes mail and other documents; follows-up on impending actions. • Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Studies in: Human Resource management or Business Administration. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN Language is desirable.
