Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.
The intern, under the general guidance of a primary supervisor, will be assigned to the Information Management & Data Analytics Team (IMDA), within the Emergency Response Section (ERS), located within the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division (FOTCD), based in Geneva. The Emergency Response Section coordinates rapid response activities and provides specialized technical and operational support to field presences, geographic sections and OHCHR leadership in the areas of early warning and preparedness, fact-finding, investigation, establishment and running of field presences and humanitarian action.
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the general guidance of the Head of ERS, the intern will work in coordination with the IMDA team to support information management initiatives and report to the respective Information Management Officer in the area of assignment. This assignment may be offered for an initial period of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension up to a total combined period of six (6) months, upon further approval by the supervisor, and an initial commencement date ranging/starting from March to August 2024.
Daily responsibilities of Information Management (Data Visualization and Design) interns will depend on the individual’s background and duties may include but are not limited to lending support to projects and/or activities within the Section, and in particular, the intern may:
• Develop infographic snapshots, two-page visual reports, info-factsheets and standalone infographics to present tabular data and textual information in a easy to read and understandable manner through charts, graphs and/or maps.
• Develop data visualizations and other visual materials to accompany data-driven stories for advocacy and accountability.
• Utilize design principles for creating visually appealing and effective data visualizations. while incorporating colour palette, typography, and layout of the organization.
• Collaborate with other staff to develop data visualizations for senior management and field office’s for decision-making and advocacy of human rights accountability.
• Perform other data and visual related functions as requested.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme, applicants must, at the time of their submission, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) preferably in the area of graphic design, data visualization or a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship on the date specified in the Acceptance letter.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience to participate in the internship programme though any relevant academic and/or practical experience with graphic design, business analysis, data analysis, or the visualization and/or mapping of numeric analysis is desirable. Practical experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Illustrator and InDesign is desirable. Experience with QGIS/ArcGIS, and data visualization tools is an advantage.
Are you a graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or, are you a graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) preferably in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, information management, public administration, management a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above?
Do you have relevant practical experience with graphic design, business analysis, data analysis or the visualization and/or mapping of numeric analysis?
Do you have practical experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Illustrator and InDesign?
Do you have experience with QGIS/ArcGIS ?
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
