Duties and Responsibilities
The Advocacy Section (AS), Public Affairs and Policy Support Branch (PAB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is offering an internship opportunity for a period of six months, starting in June 2024. The Public Advocacy Section serves as a driving force in advancing the organization’s mission to combat drugs, crime, and corruption on a global scale. Among its initiatives are awareness campaigns, policy advocacy, and capacity-building programs aimed at empowering governments, law enforcement agencies, and civil society to effectively address the challenges posed by drugs, crime, and corruption. Among other activities, the team works on developing communication strategies, managing public relations including with the media, crisis communications, digital and social media management, brand management and monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of communications efforts. The internship is unpaid and full-time (five days per week – 40 hours.). The selected intern will gain practical working experience in an international organization setting in communications while providing valuable support to the Advocacy Section team, contributing actively to increasing the organization’s visibility. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Capture the essence of UNODC’s work through evocative and sensitively shot photographs. • Assist with photography coverage of events and conferences, drafting description texts while ensuring adherence to UNODC’s photography and branding guidelines. • Independently edit and retouch photo(s) under the guidance of Advocacy Section team and according to the technical specifications available. • Support with the maintenance of UNODC photo-audio-visual library, independent selection, uploading and indexing of any photos taken in the framework of UNODC’s mandates, ensuring that naming of folders and subfolders is correct and follows the predefined standards, and assist in migrating photos from the archive to the library. Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme majoring in Communications/Graphic Design/Journalism/Film/Multimedia or related field. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. • Be computer literate in standard software applications, be able to edit the photos in high-quality and create an engaging product, including the addition of graphics where required. • Have experience working with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, including the editing of RAW files), and Canva. • Experience with the use of Trello is desired. • Experience working in communications and social media is an asset. • Basic knowledge of other design tools and experience with photography, ideally using DSLRs – is an asset. • Experience managing photographic databases, including basic understanding of screen-reader descriptions for enhanced accessibility, copyright and metadata. • Understanding of corporate use of graphics, photos and social media is an asset. • Show interest in the United Nations’ work and have shown a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of French language is an advantage.
Additional Information
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa,accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship.
