Duties and Responsibilities
The International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG), established in 2005 under the umbrella of the United Nations, promotes voluntary cooperation on matters of mutual interest related to civil satellite-based positioning, navigation, timing, and value-added services, therefore contributing to the sustainable development of the world. Among the core missions of the ICG are to encourage coordination among providers of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), regional systems, and augmentations in order to ensure greater compatibility, interoperability, and transparency, and to promote the introduction and utilization of these services and their future enhancements, including in developing countries, through assistance, if necessary, with the integration into their infrastructures. The ICG also serves to assist GNSS users with their development plans and applications, by encouraging coordination and serving as a focal point for information exchange. For more information on UNOOSA, please visit the following website: www.unoosa.org The internship is located in the Executive Secretariat of the ICG Section of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). The intern reports to the Chief of the Section. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background. Duties may include, but are not limited to: 1. Support the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) programme for scientific research, education and development; 2. Support the preparations of meetings and activities of the International Committee on GNSS (ICG), its Providers’ Forum and working groups; 3. Draft background notes, papers and other documents in support of the ICG and its working groups; 4. Support the preparations of the workshops on GNSS applications and the International Space Weather Initiative (ISWI); 5. Prepare summaries, meeting minutes and other administrative related outputs; 6. Support the development and maintenance of the ICG information portal website; 7. Perform other tasks as necessary
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
