About the Intern, Tax Compliance role:
We are looking for a summer intern to join us on a 10-12 week assignment where they will learn more about Federal and state tax filing processes and assist the Tax team with those efforts. This internship will provide an excellent opportunity for an interested student who wants to gain more insight into taxes and finance within the context of a large nonprofit organization.

A hybrid work schedule with 2 days on-site in our Chevy Chase headquarters office and 3 days remote per week
What you’ll do:
Assist with preparation of Federal Forms 990 and 990-T for HHMI and a related entity
Learn more about Federal and state tax forms, rules, requirements, and guidelines relevant to tax exempt organizations
Participate in the beginning of the process for next year’s tax returns including reviewing Schedules K-1, utilizing the latest tax software to organize and analyze data, gaining an understanding of unrelated business income, and learning about foreign filing requirements related to HHMI’s alternative investments
Work alongside the Senior Accountant, Tax to support the state tax return filing process
What you bring:
An in-progress undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or another related area of study. Applicants pursuing graduate degrees are also welcome to apply.
Completion of an undergraduate-level introductory tax course is required.
Interest in tax-exempt organizations is preferred but not required.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel is required.
This position will be compensated at a rate of $20.00 per hour, assuming a 40-hour work week.
Physical Requirements
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
