Security, Crime and Intelligence Innovation InstituteWe have an exciting opportunity to join the Disinformation, Strategic Communications and Open-Source (DISCOS) research programme, as part of the Security, Crime and Intelligence Innovation Institute at Cardiff University. Reflecting significant funding success, we are looking to recruit to several positions across multiple projects (see below).Our interdisciplinary team blends social and behavioural scientists, with data and computer scientists, and has been at the forefront of research in this field internationally for a decade. We are keen to hear from applicants from a variety of backgrounds, including:

  • Practical experience working as a social media or open-source intelligence analyst, especially on security-related topics;
  • Data science with skills in data visualisation and/or natural language processing;
  • Degrees across the social or behavioural sciences, with training in research methods and experience of working with digital data;
  • Journalism, especially data or investigative journalists.

We are dedicated to understanding disinformation and how information manipulation operations are organised and conducted.   • Provide expert advice and guidance on open-source intelligence and investigation processes and procedures to internal and external customers that will have national and international impacts, informing the work of a range of external government stakeholders, their strategic developments and plans.
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within the field of open-source intelligence and investigations where they fall within set role objectives, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action and ensuring complex and conceptual issues and solutions are understood by the audience.
  • Plan and deliver projects working to the different timescales of external partners, managing the operation of project teams as needed, planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required.
  • Investigate and analyse specific issues using a variety of open-source materials, creating recommendation reports supported by advances in data science tools and techniques.
  • Ensure that timely open-source analysis is delivered to the institute, contributing to its impact and reputation within a specialist professional community.
  • Establish relationships with key contacts to ensure role objectives are meet, develop appropriate communication links with outside bodies as required.
  • Create specific working groups from colleagues sharing specialist expertise to achieve SCIII funded research objectives.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the institute.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University within the field of advanced open-source analysis techniques and methods.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience * Substantial experience of working on open-source intelligence investigations.

  • Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge within specialist discipline, to be recognised as an authority in the field.
  • Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures working with new and emerging data sources relating to contemporary geopolitical developments.
  • Must hold and maintain national security clearance at DV level and be able to work in accordance with the requirements of this status.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working * Able to influence senior decision-makers within specialist discipline that have a strategic impact.

  • Evidence of ability to explore stakeholders’ needs, adapt the service, and set expectations.

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving * Evidence of ability to research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions.
