How can you make a difference?

1. Review literature on disability in Somalia, the policy and legal environment, attitudes, beliefs and practices, and the UNdaunted programme.
2. Develop and submit to UNICEF a synopsis on each of the three stories and a production schedule.
3. Travel to Galmudug, Somaliland, and Puntland where the UNdaunted programme is being implemented to collect the stories. The three feature stories will focus on actions being taken to promote disability-inclusive education across the entire education system in Somalia. The following angles will be the basis of the stories produced in this Plan.
o Girls’ empowerment: Profile a female member of the Girls’ Empowerment Forum who has exhibited strong negotiation, communication, and leadership skills. What are her motivations? What barriers is she overcoming? What is her support system? What does her family think of this? What does the Programme aim to achieve?
o Disability-friendly learning materials for the ABE programme: Profile a school that is piloting the Braille textbooks, specifically zeroing in on the headteacher’s pioneering role and the experiences of the students. What are the experiences of the students so far? How were the teachers trained and how do they combine special education with their regular teaching activities? Interview with UNICEF Education Specialist to explain the broader plan beyond the pilot and how this Programme is a gamechanger.
o Children on-the-Move: Profile a girl, possibly with disability, who has been displaced by drought/floods and has managed to enroll in an ABE center in another location. The story will explore the broader issue of conflict and displacement in Somalia and its impact on the education of marginalized children, especially those with disability. Reiterate key messages about the learning crisis in Somalia where 4 million children are out-of-school and the cost of inaction.
4. Submit scripts for proofing by UNICEF and finalize.
5. Work with the photographer (hired by UNICEF) to select, edit and caption photographs relevant to the stories.
6. Submit the final text and photos.
