Position description

This position is located in the Department of Labor, Administrative Review Board. The Secretary of Labor has delegated authority to the ARB to issue final agency decisions in cases arising under a wide range of labor laws (primarily environmental, transportation and securities whistleblower protection, immigration, child labor, employment discrimination, job training, seasonal and migrant workers and federal construction and contracts).

Works under the supervision of a senior attorney or General Counsel. Prepares factual and procedural history of the case. Prepares legal analysis of party positions. Drafts decisions and orders for supervisory review. Blended caseload. Occasional judicial contact.

Reviews incoming case files for completeness and content. Inventories the contents of the case file. Ensures required documents are included, verifies signatures and notes errors and errors, and items requiring follow-up action before the case can be accepted and analyzed.

Studies each case and develops a detailed understanding of the background, nature of the appeal, and the rationale presented by the appellant and their attorney(s).

Locates and cross-references precedent cases, underlying, applicable laws, and regulations, etc. needed to review each case and make determinations needed to grant or deny an appeal.

Researches and analyzes facts of the case. Studies briefs from all parties. Dissects case principles, discussion papers, reports to inform judges, argue decisions, and substantiate findings.

Monitors and reports on the status and progress of work; reviews completed work to ensure instructions regarding work priorities, methods, deadlines, and quality are met.

 

 

Qualifications

GS-11, completion of first professional law degree (LL.B. or JD) and active membership in good standing of the bar.

GS-12, one (1) year of progressively responsible, post-law school legal experience of a professional nature which demonstrates the ability to perform the work at this level.

Verification of your academic degree(s) is necessary to determine your qualifications or eligibility for this position, you will be required to submit an official transcripts for verification purposes before you are hired. However, unofficial transcripts may be submitted during the application phase of the process. Please note that your J.D. or LL.B degree must be conferred before you begin working.

In addition to transcripts, applicants must also provide an unedited legal writing sample that is no more than ten (10) pages long with your application in order to receive further consideration.

 

Salary

$82,764 – $128,956 per year
