Expected duration
The duration of the internship is between four (4) months. The intern is expected to work five days a week, on a full-time basis.
Duties and Responsibilities
THE ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets international Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) for aviation safety, air navigation, security and environmental protection. To that effect, ICAO is a knowledge-based organization engaged in the development of intellectual property. The Bureau of Administration and Services (ADB) plays a lead role in the effective and efficient administrative management of the Organization by ensuring the provision of high-quality physical and human resources, by applying the highest standards of work ethics and conduct, and by using results-based management skills and tools to support the Organization in implementing its Strategic Objectives, in order to serve all stakeholders of the world aviation community. ICAO is currently implementing several Digital Transformation signature projects. Digital Transformation encompasses all aspects of the Organization’s work, activities, and operations. Modernizing the Organization will facilitate its ability to leverage alternative opportunities while broadening its support to Member States at the same time. It will also enable the Organization to keep abreast of technological development, adopt emerging technologies and act as a catalyst for its stakeholder communities to understand and follow its path. Standards and Recommended Practices (SARP) and Document Management System (DMS) Project Description: The establishment and maintenance of international SARPs are a core aspect of ICAO’s mission and role. SARPs are critical to ICAO Member States and other stakeholders, given that they provide the fundamental basis for harmonized global aviation safety, security, environment protection and efficiency in the air and on the ground, the worldwide standardization of functional and performance requirements of air navigation facilities and services, and the orderly development of air transport. The SARPs/DMS digital transformation project will deliver significantly improved efficiencies in developing and maintaining SARPs as well as a proper DMS. It will also help drive improved collaboration and lead to overall improved stakeholder satisfaction. Reporting to the Digital Transformation SARPs/DMS Project Manager, the incumbent will be working in a team environment with business and technical project team members. TERMS OF REFERENCE Under the supervision of the SARPs/DMS project manager, the intern will focus on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance data management and collaborative workspaces within the project. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI applications in the aviation industry and gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and collaborative environment. The candidate will support with the following: • Collaborates with project team members to understand the requirements and objectives of the SARPs/DMS project; • Researches and explores AI technologies and methodologies applicable to data management including data classification, data extraction, data analysis, and data visualization; • Develops and implements AI algorithms and models to automate data processing tasks and improves the efficiency of SARPs development and maintenance processes; • Assists in the integration of AI solutions with existing document management systems and collaborative workspaces, such as SharePoint or similar platforms, to streamline document retrieval, categorization, version control, and collaborative editing processes; • Evaluates the performance of AI models and algorithms, fine-tuning parameters and optimizing workflows as needed; • Documents the AI development process, including methodologies, algorithms, and findings, and present findings to project stakeholders as required; • Performs other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Educational background: At the time of application, candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second-level university degree or higher). The programme must be in a field of study related to information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field, with a focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, or data science. Applicants pursuing studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, should have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Knowledge and Skills: • Strong understanding of AI concepts and techniques, including machine learning algorithms, natural language processing, and computer vision. • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in AI development, such as Python, R, or TensorFlow. • Experience with data management and analysis tools. • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Good communication skills and ability to effectively present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. • Knowledge of ICAO and its mandate, the aviation sector or the United Nations system is desirable.
Languages
Essential requirements: Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English. Desirable requirements: A working knowledge of a second language of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
