The CTBTO awards a limited number of internships to university students and recent graduates from diverse academic background. Its purpose is to provide a learning and development experience in a field related to the Commission’s activities specialized in various professional fields. Interns usually work on specific practical assignments. Opportunities for internships are available subject to the current needs of the individual divisions within the CTBTO. 

Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna, Austria is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

The External Relations, Protocol, and International Cooperation Section is located within the Legal and External Relations Division. The Section’s role is to interact with State signatories, non-signatory States, international organizations and other bodies in order to promote entry into force and universalization of the Treaty, as well as to provide protocol and other external relations services for the CTBTO.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Chief, External Relations, Protocol and International Cooperation Section, and in coordination with the responsible Senior External Relations and/or Protocol Officer, to:

  1. Conduct research in order to assist the Section in promoting the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and its universalization;
  2. Conduct research on political developments related to the CTBT and preparation of related reports;
  3. Assist Senior External Relations Officers in the Section in preparing background documents in preparation for meetings and other events;
  4. Assist in writing reports on meetings related to the CTBT and other related events;
  5. Assist with preparations for outreach activities, such as workshops and seminars;
  6. Assist in performing protocol functions;
  7. Assist with general preparations for Section’s activities in the context of the Commission’s integrated capacity building and contribute to content creation for e-learning platform and its maintenance;
  8. Undertake other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications

  • Candidates for an internship must be at least 18 years of age and no more than 35 years of age;
  • At the time of application, the applicant must have completed at least two years of full-time study that will lead to an award of a degree in international relations or other relevant field;
  • Applications may be accepted up to two years after completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Strong analytical and research skills are essential;
  • Solid knowledge of disarmament and non-proliferation concepts and familiarity with international treaties and organizations in these fields is desirable;
  • Experience in drafting speeches, briefing notes and talking points is highly desirable;

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is desirable.

An intern is neither a staff member nor an official of the Commission. An intern who is a non-Austrian citizen is responsible for obtaining any necessary visas and for complying with local laws concerning police registration.
