About us:
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.
Program Description:
The selected intern will participate in rearing endangered Atlantic salmon from several listed populations at a cold-water conservation hatchery. Activities include releasing juvenile and adult Atlantic salmon, collecting biological samples for disease screening, feeding adult and juvenile broodstock, cleaning rearing units, conducting monthly growth monitoring of juvenile and adult salmon, maintaining automated feeders, assisting in moving, sorting and grading juvenile salmon, PIT tagging future broodstock, spawning, egg enumeration and care, electrofishing, and stocking multiple life stages of Atlantic salmon. Green Lake National Fish Hatchery (NFH) is open to the public year-round and interns will have the opportunity to interact with visitors by giving tours of the facility or providing other outreach services.
The selected intern will participate in daily maintenance activities at the hatchery which include cleaning rearing units, tanks and pools, grounds maintenance, hiking trail maintenance, hatchery equipment repair, and other general maintenance projects.
The selected intern may have the opportunity to participate in monitoring lake water quality and adult sea-run broodstock collection. The selected intern will work cooperatively with personnel from both Green Lake NFH and Craig Brook NFH, the Maine Fishery Resources Office, the State of Maine, various non-government agency partners, and hatchery volunteers.
Housing is provided at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in a 3 bedroom/1 bath house. Intern will be required to commute to Green Lake National Fish Hatchery each day for work. The hatcheries are 20 miles apart and the intern will be provided with a weekly commuting allowance to cover the commuting expense.
