The ILO Country Office for Pacific Island Countries in Suva serves 22 countries, of which 11 are ILO member States. The primary objective of the Office is to assist governments and employers’ and workers’ organizations of Pacific Island countries in their efforts to reduce decent work deficits, and to pursue development for dignity through the achievements of rights at work, employment, social protection and social dialogue. The ILO collaborates closely with the United Nations Country Teams in each of the States it serves, and aligns its programme of work to promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Intern will be supervised directly by the International Labour Standards & Labour Law Reform Specialist, who is responsible for promoting the ILO’s international normative agenda for the world of work. This includes advising on the meaning of ILO standards; supporting ILO constituents in their application and implementation; and assisting member States to fulfil their reporting obligations to the ILO’s supervisory system. The Specialist also advises on the effects and role of labour laws and labour dispute resolution systems as institutions for effective labour market governance, and for the pursuit of a wide range of labour market policy goals. The aim is ultimately to provide proactive, integrated policy advice on what labour law and labour dispute resolutions systems can do, drawing on evidence from other countries.
This work is done by providing technical advice to member States and ILO constituents, and through a targeted programme of research. The Specialist also backstops and manages two externally funded development cooperation projects. One of these promotes the implementation of ILO standards in Pacific Island countries. The other works to improve labour standards in the fisheries sector.

Description of Duties:

Under the supervision of the International Labour Standards and Labour Law Reform Specialist, the Intern will provide support in the following areas:

  • Programming on International Labour Standards ensuring that gender is effectively and meaningfully mainstreamed within interventions and approaches    
  • Development of communications that represent gender norm transformation, in a manner consistent with the value of the International Labour Organization                                                                        
  • Mainstreaming gender issues into project proposals, developing knowledge and information-sharing sessions and attending gender-related events  
Specific tasks/deliverables:
  • Support ILO development cooperation projects to ensure the effective and meaningful mainstreaming of gender issues into the project interventions.                    
  • Provide assistance on gender and inclusion issues from a technical perspective, including reviewing papers, presentations, plans of action, reports and other relevant documents.
  • Support the program team with the delivery of workshops, meetings and other events to ensure accessibility and inclusion.
  • Draft reports, Terms of Reference, administrative and concept notes, communication and campaign materials (including Tweets and FB updates, press releases and media advisories) as required and requested by the Supervisor.            
Education:
  • A first-level university degree in Law, Economics, Development or another related area, with demonstrated interest and experience in gender and development issues, especially within the world of work would be highly advantageous. At the time of application, the candidate must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme or equivalent), or in a higher degree programme (e.g., PhD), in a recognized university, school, similar institution or related vocational programme, in a relevant field, or have completed such program in the year preceding the application.
  • Experience in development programming (preferably in the Pacific), awareness of and/or exposure to the United Nations systems an advantage.                                                  
  • Fluency in English, high-level written and spoken communication and presentation skills, knowledge and skills in the Microsoft Office suite of programs are required.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, and the ability to work within a diverse team and to adapt to an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment.
  • Personal commitment to the values of the United Nations system and ILO and diversity and inclusion.
Languages:
  • Good Knowledge of English.
