Description

The internship is located in the Skills, Active Labour Market Policies and Policy Evaluation Team of the ILO Research Department, which conducts research on lifelong learning, skills and transitions in the labour market, as well as the effectiveness of employment policies. The team aims to understand (1) how skills are changing outside of Europe and the United States (where there is knowledge already), through the use of online data and natural language processing; (2) which skills are needed to enable transitions to decent employment across the life-cycle, through panel-data analysis and quasi-experimental, causal techniques; and (3) the role of policies in fostering these transitions, through impact evaluations. Another stream of work of the unit concerns the effectiveness of active labour market policies and institutions with a view to understand which policy options work under which specific circumstances to improve labour market conditions, principally through impact evaluations. The research contributes to the formulation of policy considerations to inform ILO constituents on ways to improve labour market and social outcomes of women and men.

As an intern in the Skills, Active Labour Market Policies and Policy Evaluation Team, you will be asked to contribute to the research via different tasks in accordance with the current workload of the Team, but also taking into account, as much as possible, your personal preferences. This will be a combination of the following tasks:

  • · Contribute to the current research agenda of the team on lifelong learning, skills and transitions.
  • · Identify research gaps by conducting literature reviews.
  • · Prepare, clean and process databases, such as data from job boards (vacancies, applicant profiles) or data from labour force or household surveys.
  • · Participate in quantitative analyses (e.g. descriptive statistics) as well as more advanced econometric analysis carried out in the team.
  • · Prepare figures, tables and other material aimed to present complex findings in a simpler manner.
  • · Draft written inputs for both internal and external use and prepare presentations.
  • · Respond to ad-hoc requests. Interns should expect to devote 10% of their time to administrative tasks.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree in economics or other social science. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

Experience:

  • Three years of academic or professional experience in research, data management and statistical analysis. Experience in the area of skills analysis and/or impact evaluation of labour market or social protection policies would be an advantage.

Languages:

  • Excellent command of English. Spanish, French or Russian would be considered an advantage.
