You are applying to the ILO generic internship roster, which is published several times per year. The roster will be made available to all departments and field offices, which will then select and directly contact suitable candidates. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, the ILO does not inform candidates about the status of their application.

ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

**Please note that you can apply to a maximum of three internship profiles during the current application period. If you apply to more than three internship profiles, your application will not be considered for any profile.** Note that you may withdraw your candidature at any time via the Jobs Applied section of your profile.

It is highly recommended that you submit your application as soon as possible to avoid last minute technical issues or delays. Late applications will not be considered.

The ILO values diversity. We welcome applications from candidates, particularly from non- or under- represented member States from the following countries: https://jobs.ilo.org/content/Non–and-under-represented-member-States/?locale=en_GB

Qualified candidates from those countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for round-trip airfare (economy class) in addition to the stipend.

The ILO also encourages applications of persons with disabilities. If needed, reasonable accommodation will be provided to candidates with disabilities in the recruitment phase as well as during the internship to promote equality of opportunities. For assistance, please send an e-mail to internship@ilo.org

IMPORTANT:
Please only apply for an internship if you fulfil the following two criteria:

(1) You have no close relative serving in the ILO.

(2) This is your first internship with the ILO (only one internship is permitted).

Please note that in the context of the new ILO organigram, the naming of the departments may be subject to change.

Department

The Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, based at ILO Headquarters in Geneva, is responsible for the ILO’s presence and activities in the 51 countries comprising the region.

Its roles include the development of ILO work priorities in the region, monitoring programme delivery, and providing support and coordination to its field structure. The latter comprises two Sub-regional Offices in Budapest and Moscow; seven Country Offices located in Ankara, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris and Rome; and National Coordinators in various other Member States.

The Regional Office serves as a link between the technical departments of the ILO and the field structure in Europe and Central Asia, and represents the region vis-à-vis the ILO tripartite constituency, as well as other UN and international organisations.

Learning area

As an intern in the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, you will be gaining experience of the multilateral system through working with the staff of the Regional Office on decent work and the 2030 Agenda, and by assisting them in programmatic as well as UN partnerships and coordination work in the region.

In this role, you will contribute to the programming work of the Regional Office in terms of the regional architecture of the UN system, including the development of relations with Resident Coordinators (RCs), Regional Collaborative Platform, Issue-Based Coalitions and the Peer Support Group. This would involve work on the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework processes.

The intern may be required to prepare briefings, speaking points and presentations related to the ILO’s role at the regional level within the wider UN system; attend meetings with other UN agencies; and contribute to the main programmatic outputs of the Regional Office. The intern may also prepare a comparative analysis on UN presence and strengths in respective countries of the region.

The Intern will gain experience in working with specialists who are involved in the following tasks: multilateral cooperation within and outside the UN System, UN Reform, and regional and country-level field support on sustainable development.

You may also be required to collect and analyse information on the countries of the region, including statistical data and information on economic and social policies at regional, sub-regional and national level, while keeping abreast of the work performed by other actors in the region. You may also participate in collaborative efforts with other UN agencies and contribute to knowledge exchange among development partners.

To these ends, we are looking for an agile thinker with good research and writing skills, who is well-versed in broad current debates in employment and social policy, knowledgeable of the dynamics of the Europe and Central Asia region, adaptable to work within a multicultural environment, and committed to improving the working lives of people in the region.

Languages

Excellent working (both oral and written) knowledge of English; working knowledge of another ILO official language (French or Spanish) is desirable. Another European language would be an advantage.

Competencies

Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and be able to work in a team. Excellent analytical and writing skills (in particular in English), Experience in research and data analysis; knowledge of statistical software an advantage.

You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department or field office within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the field office for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.
