(increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

The ILO’s Evaluation Office (EVAreports to the DirectorGeneral. The Evaluation Office is responsible for the implementation and coordination of evaluation policy, practices and oversight of selected evaluation activities funded by regular budget and donor agencies of the ILO.

Towards this end, EVAL’s intern will be involved with work plan issues on:
• Monitoring and reporting of evaluation activities and outcomes in the ILO covering through 202425;
• Desk reviews and support for highlevel strategy evaluations, thematic evaluations (including synthesis reviewand cluster Decent Work Country Programme evaluations; the tentative topics for the high level evaluations in 2025 are: 1)Youth Employment, 2) Better Work, and 3) Latin America. Candidates with a particular background or interest in these three areas are encouraged to apply.
• Metaanalysis and studies on issues of quality, effectiveness of programmes and projects, lessons learned and models of interventions
• Evaluation knowledge management products and services (database, newsletter, webenabled knowledge platforms, etc.);
• Improving ILO capacities and quality control for impact evaluation, including through development of tools and guidelines, training, and development and maintenance of process for tracking elements and progress.

Learning area

As an intern in Evaluation in the central independent evaluation office, you will be exposed to full range of areas of work related to evaluation such as

Implementation of the evaluation policy, strategy, and guidelines throughout the Office, providing management and guidance and building capacity on evaluation
Management and implementation of sound credible evaluations at different levels, from evaluation design, methodology development, data collection and dissemination
Support to production, dissemination and use of evaluation findings as part of knowledge management

You would be gaining experience in working with evaluation specialists who are involved in the management and implementation of evaluations and with a wide range of technical, regional, and thematic experience.

As the Evaluation Office works across all areas of work of the ILO, the internship will provide an opportunity to broad exposure to the work of an international organisation such as ILO and the policy, technical and administrative work involved. You will increase your understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving you directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes, and strategies.

Through providing support to several key evaluations and products of the evaluation unit, you will have direct exposure to how evaluation is carried out in an international developmentoriented organisation.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Education

  • Participants in the internship programme should have a graduate and/or postgraduate degree in one of the social sciences, economics, or public administration, preferable with course work in evaluation and/or related applied research methodologies.
  • The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago.

Experience

  • Experience in conducting research and academic course work in research methods.
  • Documentable experience in analysing socioeconomic data.
  • Good writing and editing skills in English and either French or Spanish.
  • Experience in the developing and management of databases.
  • Specific knowledge of evaluation and evaluation methods; knowledge of development programme/project cycle
  • Command of Microsoft Excel; familiarity with NVivo. SPSS and data analysis software desired.
  • Work experience in international development, preferably at country level, would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Languages

Proficiency in English and working knowledge of either French or Spanish.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HR, hiring departments will shortlist applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, email, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend/Financial compensations:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundatio. If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

Qualified candidates from nonand underrepresented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for roundtrip airfare (economy clasin addition to the stipend.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the fiel.
