The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

The position is located at the Social Dialogue and Tripartism Unit (DIALOGUE) of the Governance and Tripartism Department (GOVERNANCE). The overall mandate of DIALOGUE is to advocate for and promote effective and inclusive social dialogue at all levels, with a view to encouraging good governance in the world of work and advancing social justice and decent work for all.

In particular, the unit assists the tripartite ILO constituents in establishing and improving policy, institutional and regulatory frameworks for social dialogue and tripartite cooperation between/among governments and employers’ and workers’ organizations; strengthening the capacity of social dialogue actors; and enhancing the role and impact of social dialogue and tripartism in the design and implementation of labour, economic and social policies at all levels.

DIALOGUE conducts research and disseminates knowledge products on social dialogue and industrial relations; develops and disseminates tools to underpin its policy advice and capacity building for the tripartite constituents; supports the development of knowledge and policy on global industrial relations, including in the form of cross-border social dialogue and agreements. To expand the Office’s knowledge base and maximize the impact of its work at the country and international levels, DIALOGUE collaborates with all units and departments across the Office, including field offices, and with external partner institutions.

The intern will report to the Head of DIALOGUE and be assigned to work under the responsibility of and technical guidance of Senior staff of the unit. She/he will support the delivery of the work programme of the unit, particularly

Learning Area

An intern should possess strong research, analytical and communication skills. While undergoing training in the Unit the intern is expected to fulfil the following tasks:

1.Identify, collect, analyse data and information -of national or comparative scope- on social dialogue and tripartism and themes relevant to the unit’s mandate and workplan, using all sources of information; update relevant databases or repositories.

2.Undertake research, including reviews of literature, and prepare analytical notes and country profiles on systems and trends of social dialogue and industrial relations and relevant themes such as: peak-level social dialogue and tripartite cooperation; legal frameworks for social pacts; representativeness; cross-border social dialogue; shaping labour market policy and regulation through social dialogue; social dialogue responses to crises and transitions; improving the inclusiveness of social dialogue including in relation to youth and vulnerable workers; ensuring social dialogue’s relevance to advancing gender equality; mainstreaming social dialogue in the UN system, , and in other international organisations.

3.Prepare notes and other material on the above matters;

4.Participate in the dissemination and communication strategy of the unit, including through assisting in the organization of workshops and seminars, drafting newsletters and maintaining databases and repositories of knowledge.

5.Undertake any other tasks at the request of the Head of the unit

Education

In addition to the standard requirements for conducting an internship in the ILO, the incumbent should have a degree on Industrial and Employment Relations, or one related to Social Sciences.

Experience

Any relevant work experience, and knowledge of IT, would be an advantage.

Languages

Excellent commend of English and, if possible, working knowledge in French and/or Spanish.

Competencies

Capacity to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and ability to work in team.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
