The Operations and Technology Support Branch (OTSB) provides key support to all INS operations and technology-related activities, drawing upon operational synergies with the OPCW ChemTech Centre. 

OTSB is responsible for coordinating all INS missions, providing operational, informational, administrative, technical and logistical support and ensuring timely and efficient procurement and maintenance of inspection equipment.

OTSB also maintains close communication with inspection teams and States Parties before, during, and after the inspections. OTSB’s Situation Centre provides 24/7 support and maintains comprehensive operational control of missions to ensure secure and reliable communications through its Operations Centre.

Through its InfoCell Unit, OTSB also analyses information and briefs OPCW leadership to facilitate the decision-making process and assist in crisis management.

Main Responsibilities

1) Purpose of Internship:

The purpose of the internship is to offer a comprehensive learning experience in open-source research within an international organization. The intern will be involved in gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information from open-sources while contributing to organization’s mandate and activities. The internship is designed to develop critical research and analytical skills while offering a broader understanding of the global context in which OPCW operates.

2) Terms of Reference for the Internship:

• Monitoring, analysing, and reporting on time sensitive open-source information, including allegations of chemical weapons use, security threats to deployed OPCW missions, and developments in conflict areas of interest.

• Conducting open-source research and contributing to the preparation of various sections of Information

• Cell’s routine reports (weekly + monthly), as well as ad hoc analytical products.

• Drafting a working paper on the CW capabilities of a state not party to the CWC.

• Monitoring open sources concerning fires, explosions and major accidents at industrial chemical facilities worldwide and drafting brief notes related on the subject.

Qualifications and Experience education

Essential:

• Enrolled in and have completed at least one year of a degree programme in a university (or equivalent tertiary institution) or;

• in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher) or;

• have graduated from a university or a graduate school within a year prior to the commencement of the internship.

• Be a citizen of an OPCW Member State and fluent in both written and spoken English.

Desirable:

• A university degree in international relations, security studies, or a closely related field is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

• Strong analytical skills and ability to analyse complex information, identify emerging trends, and extract insights that align with and support the OPCW’s strategic objectives and operational priorities;

• Good knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Office, MS Teams and SharePoint;

• Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a diverse team, strong time management and organizational skills.

Languages

fluency in English is essential and a good working knowledge of one of the other official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is desirable.
