OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

UNESCO’s International Institute for Higher Education (IESALC) is the only specialized Institute (Category 1) in the United Nations system with a mandate for higher education improvement in member states. UNESCO IESALC’s vision is to promote the right to higher education through capacity development for the formulation and implementation of quality, equitable, and inclusive higher education policies at the national, regional, and institutional levels in in Member States, with a global outreach. UNESCO IESALC operates in English and Spanish.

Long Description

The Policy Analysis & Technical Cooperation (PA-TC) team is seeking to recruit several Interns to join the team for the Policy Analysis area, in charge of analyzing higher education policies globally and keeping a constant dialogue with policymakers.

Interns will contribute to one or several of the following ongoing initiatives:

  • The Higher Education Policy Observatory
  • Higher education SDG briefs, policy briefs and insights (research and drafting)
  • The contribution of higher education institutions to sustainability and the SDGs
  • International aid for higher education
  • Microcredentials in higher education
  • The Regional Conference of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (CRES+5) as well as the organization of the Policy Forum and Network

Long Description

Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO IESALC, and the supervision of the Chief of Policy Analysis and Technical Cooperation and Policy Analysts, the Interns will carry out some of the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Undertake literature and case-study research on key aspects of higher education policy (institution and system levels).
  • Contribute to the collection, verification, and analysis of data on higher education policies and systems.
  • Assisting in drafting short research and policy reports/notes.
  • Support international liaison with UNESCO field offices, governmental authorities in higher education and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Assisting in producing other dissemination documents (podcasts, blogs, social media posts, etc.).
  • Contribute to the organization of meetings and events (both face-to-face and online).
  • Carry out any other duty relevant to the fulfilment of the work plan of projects.

Long Description

After completion of the assignment, the Interns will have:

  • Acquired an in-depth knowledge of higher education policy.
  • Gained a good working knowledge of the operations of and with an intergovernmental organization.
  • Increase his/her familiarity with higher education data and analysis
  • Improve his/her drafting skills
  • Acquired project management skills; setting particular objectives and developed appropriate mediation, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
  • Strengthened his/her analytical, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: University degree in the field of social sciences, education, public policy, international relations.

Language: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Education or professional experience in the field of higher education policy or management would be an asset.

Skills/competencies: Experience with network management, communication and/or research and drafting.

Language: Knowledge of another UNESCO official language (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, and/or Russian), in particular Spanish, would be an asset.

SUMMARY

Job Family: Higher Education

Type and Duration of contract: Intern (entry-level program). Full-time (40 hours/week) for 3 months, with possible extension to 3 additional months. Part-time possible only for specific circumstances.

Monthly allowance: 300 USD. No additional benefits are provided.

Location: Remote. Applicants are responsible for ensuring they have a reliable high speed internet connection and the necessary technology for office work.

Start date: March 2024 (for 2 positions) and June/July 2024 (for 2 positions)
