ILO Decent Work Technical Support Team for East and South-East Asia and the Pacific and Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic (ILO DWT-Bangkok, Thailand)

East and South-East Asia and the Pacific, comprising the ASEAN Member States (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam); the East Asian countries of China (including Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR), the Republic of Korea and Mongolia; Timor-Leste, and the Pacific Island countries of Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, is the most populous and diverse subregion in the world. It has more than a third of the world’s population, with levels of development ranging from Least Developed Countries (Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic) to the highly industrialized nations of the Republic of Korea and Singapore, and from some of the most populous countries in the world (China and Indonesia) to the small Pacific island states.

East and South-East Asia and the Pacific has been a major driving force for global economic growth, although the rates of growth within the subregion vary considerably. Systems of government in the subregion are equally diverse.

The primary objective of the ILO Decent Work Technical Support Team for East and South-East Asia and the Pacific (ILO DWT-Bangkok) is to provide technical support to the work of ILO Country Offices (Bangkok, Beijing, Hanoi, Jakarta, Manila and Suva) in assisting governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations in East and South-East Asia and the Pacific in their efforts to promote decent work. This technical support covers a wide range of specific subjects within the four core areas of the ILO’s mandate; these are rights at work, employment, social protection and social dialogue. 

  • Learning areas
  • This internship will offer a unique opportunity to learn about the functioning of international organisations in a region which is undergoing dynamic political, economic and social transformations.
  • As an intern in the ILO DWT-Bangkok, you will be in a position to:
  • Learn about the ILO mandate and its cooperation with its constituents and other partners;
  • Gain experience in the development of social protection in the region;
  • Gain experience in developing relationships with ILO field staff, constituents and other partners to advance the ILO’s core mandates;
  • Be familiarised with the procedures of execution of development cooperation projects implemented by ILO DWT-Bangkok in the region;
  • Improve his/her writing skills as well as practice in administrative procedures;
  • Work in a cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • The intern is encouraged to participate in regular staff meetings and training courses offered to staff members of the ILO DWT-Bangkok.

Education:

  • Applicant should currently follow a course of study in economics, law, or social sciences and other disciplines, related to social protection. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago.

Experience:

  • Experience or exposure to the following technical fields would be an advantage: pensions, health, disability, unemployment, maternity, social assistance, care.

Languages:

  • Working knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of the national languages in the countries covered by ILO DWT-Bangkok will be an advantage.
