SIPRI’s Military Expenditure and Arms Production (MILAP) programme is seeking two interns from 1st of September 2024.

Internship position

This is a position under the supervision of a MILAP researcher. The intern will assist the team in all aspects of the programme’s work and activities (qualitative and quantitative research, desk research and publications; design, planning and implementation of activities; liaison with partner organisations; programme’s visibility). 

While the internship will primarily focus on contributing to data collection, the tasks assigned will enable the intern to develop further research skills.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Assist with finding, assessing and entering/adjusting data on military expenditure and arms production for the relevant databases, as well as for externally-funded projects;
  • Identify new potential sources and validating them with the MILAP team;
  • Support MILAP data launches by participating in the preparation of the Fact Sheets;
  • Support other MILAP activities (meetings, seminars and workshops);
  • Review, fact check and proofread MILAP Yearbook chapters and other output as well as reports to external funders;
  • Support the MILAP team in preparing answers to requests for information or comment from media outlets or other external queries.

Qualifications

  • Interns will need to be linked to an educational programme through a university (or equivalent), have insurance through the university, and have a contact person (e.g., an educational facilitator)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; additional languages will be seen as an advantage;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • Proactive and self-motivated;
  • Background studies in international security, political economy or defence economics, in related field, will be a plus;

The internship can be part or full-time for up to 6 months, depending on availability. The work can be performed in-person and/or remotely, depending on the location and preference of the intern, and in coordination with SIPRI.
